Conor McGregor is currently a pretty big betting favorite against Donald Cerrone, with oddsmakers having him from -293 to -337 on their books. Majority of the professionals analyzing the contest have naturally picked the Irishman to win his comeback fight, but Chael Sonnen has a different opinion.

The fighter and analyst disagrees with those saying Cowboy is a slow starter, and says the fight will be decided early on.

“We’re gonna know after the first round who’s going to win the contest. If Conor loses the first round, he is losing the contest,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

“(Conor’s) a great starter. Many people have said…

Just a friendly reminder that this guy is a literal convicted fraudster. I like Chael. But don't get sucked into obvious clickbait.

Chael is too smart to think Cowboy will actually win.

If Cowboy uses his brains and not his degree from Don Frye's School of Playing to Your Opponent's Strengths, he can take Conor down and submit him. My guess is that, as an honored alum of Don's school, he will stand with Conor, not move his head much (as usual) and get absolutely and spectacularly KTFO

How many here are picking Cerrone?
I'd like for Cerrone to win if at the very least it makes Danus look stupid for booking the Khabib rematch prematurely.

The question is whether Cowboy is dumb enough not to grapple when he should....

This is a 50/50 matchup for me. If Cowboy wins, it is only a gamblers upset based on the line, but he has more than enough tools to wipe the floor with Conor. His wrestling and BJJ are far superior to Conor, and his kick/knee strike combos are great (being the taller, longer fighter will be an asset to him, as we've seen Conor struggle against taller guys).

That said, if Conor wins it's no surprise there either. If Cowboy comes out as the "Title Fight" Cowboy, it'll be a One... One and a half round fight.

The fact that people think it'll be some huge upset if Cerrone wins, shows why MMA isn't growing as a sport. It's still a bunch of ill informed casuals who believe in the sizzle reels of the UFC PR department... Bunch of Modelo drinking, Reebok wearing morons.

If it goes past the second round, I think Cerrone should win by submission, if he commits to grappling like you said.

I’d like to see Cerrone win, just to kill the idea of a Conor/Khabib rematch, that Conor doesn’t deserve. The first fight was as one sided as it gets.

I'm not sure how anyone could possibly pick Conor if you're looking at the fight objectively. Cowboy is a better striker and grappler than Conor. I'll say the same thing about this fight that I said before the first time Conor fought Diaz. There are 3 ways to win a fight. Sub, KO/TKO, Decison. 2 of those 3 outcomes are more likely to land for Cowboy should they come to pass and a KO/TKO is pretty much a toss up.

With the fights that Conor has said that he's wanting this year (fighting 3 times, called out Khabib, Justin, and Usman), like I mentioned in another thread, we may see the complete end of Conor McGregor (and his retirement). He'll go 0 for EVERYONE this year.... Hell, if Cowboy beats him, he'll try to get a Nate or Masvidal fight, and they will beat him... He'll probably end up retiring after that. If he loses 2 fights this year, he'll retire... There's no way I can see the UFC putting him in a headliner spot at that point, and you know that he won't play second tier, even though at that point he'd lucky to convince anyone that he should headline a prelim, so he'll quit.

He won’t shoot. This is his red panty night. This is the biggest spotlight for him to live up to his “Cowboy” persona. He will leave it all in the cage and go out on his saddle. I don’t believe winning is the priority...getting this fight was the priority. The rest is just a bonus.

We'll see because save for the Iaquinta and Gaethje fight (got stopped early) Cowboy shot at least one-two TD attempts every fight since his Welterweight run. Of course his wrestling didn't prove to be successful against guys like Edwards and Lawler, but he does use level changes to hide kicks after getting his opponent to think about the shot. It's also fair to point out that McGregor isn't Robbie Lawler. Not that I think Cowboy will be able to take him down at will, because to be honest I have no idea. I will say Cowboy times some of his shots very well if you go back and watch some of his WW fights (Cote, Story, Oliviera, etc). I don't think we should rule out his wrestling, especially when the fight itself is taking place at 170 where Cowboy seems to mix things up more. I think that may go back to Cowboy feeling stronger at 170, which he commented on right after the move up. In any case my bets on a couple of TD attempts if it gets out of the first few exchanges.

Yeah, don’t get me wrong, he really should be trying to take this to the canvas to up his chances of winning... I just don’t think he will. He has one of the best double legs in the game and is so good at latching a RNC while in the scramble or against dazed opponents. I just think Donald is too proud and principled to go back on his commitment to stand, even if it means a loss.

agree, except that Cowboy has been a lot easier to hit in the last year. I think that tips the odds of TKO/KO in Conor's favor.
