It's a gamble for sure.
But if he turns out to be legit, they'll end up saving money in the long run.
I don't know if I agree with that. Mainly because of what's going on with the Yankees right now. Judge, Sanchez, Torres, and Andujar are all making around 500k a year and have been. I think Judge and Sanchez are finally eligible for arbitration after this season. So for the first 4 years in the bigs they'll have made about 2/2.5 Mill a piece. If Roberts is legit they're just spreading his money out instead of paying it in year 5 or 6. They're also going to end up having to pay huge when he's still in his prime at 28 if they want to keep him.

The Astros cheated.
Astros' Luhnow, Hinch fired after MLB gives ban

Fucking BIG!

As part of the league's penalty, the Astros will also lose first- and second-round draft picks in 2020 and 2021, and the organization was fined a record $5 million. MLB said in its statement that if Luhnow or Hinch "engage in any future material violations" of MLB rules, they will be placed on the league's permanently ineligible list.

Crane gave no timetable for naming replacements for Luhnow and Hinch.

Boston Red Sox manager Alex Cora, who was implicated in the schemes, was not disciplined but is expected to receive a similarly harsh penalty upon the completion of an investigation into illicit use of a video replay room by the 2018 Red Sox. Cora was the Astros' bench coach during the 2017 season.

Houston hit .284 at home in 2019.
They hit .265 on the road.

Only 2 teams had a larger disparity between their home averages and their away averages and that was Colorado and Texas, both of which are known hitter-friendly parks and ranked 1, 2 in overall batting average at their ballparks this past season.

While Houston hit .284 at their home park, visitors hit .219

I'd keep crunching numbers but my lunch break is over.

Bottom line: They cheated and it was effective.

This is gamesmanship.

A live video feed and using a trash can as some sort of rudimentary morse code for the batter is cheating.
Yep. But that's pretty funny to see Cora posting about this scenario years ago.

Remember when Altuve smoked Chapman's slider in the bottom of the 9th?

Most people look stupid against Chapman's slider. In 2019, the league had a .157 average against that pitch.

Altuve smoked it like he knew it was coming.

Mets Reportedly 'Wavering' on Carlos Beltran Hire After Sign-Stealing Accusations
The massive sign-stealing scandal in Major League Baseball has already claimed two managers. AJ Hinch of the Houston Astros and Alex Cora of the Boston Red Sox were shown the door for their roles in the electronic sign-stealing scheme.

Yet one untouched name consistently bandied about in the league's investigation was Carlos Beltran, who happens to be the manager of the New York Mets, and was a player on the Astros at the time, leaving him exempt from official punishment. While signs have pointed to his job remaining safe, Wednesday paints another picture.

ESPN's Buster Olney reports that the Mets are now "wavering" on the hire of Beltran after considering all factors.
watching that "9 to 5" elude him like a "12 to 6".

He probably got the Red Sux job just for being a cheating piece of shit. It's not a coincedence the Sux won the WS after hiring the cheater.
Imo there is zero chance that he didn't institute something similar with the Red Sox.
