There are many options ahead for McGregor, but Kavanagh would like to see him lock horns with Justin Gaethje (21-2 MMA, 4-2 UFC), a fighter that believes he should have been the one standing across McGregor at UFC 246.

“Justin Gaethje at 170,” Kavanagh said. “That would be my personal preference … because he’s another lightweight. Neither of them have to cut weight and the goal – I’ll be careful with my words here – the kind of vision is to get that 155-pound belt back so it’s a step towards that.”

Conor fighting decent style matchups at 170 is a clever tactic to avoid Khabib for now, but a weird one for rankings. I'm guessing he's banking on Khabib holding onto his determination to retire in a few fights and still be relevant enough against 155ers so he can swoop in for the title shot to crown a new champ.

careful with his words. nice. seems clear Conor wants to hurt Khabib, and simultaneously win the belt as if by mistake. but there may be fun subtleties here, to tease out.

2 fights at 170 = closer to 155 title, wtf?? smokin' crack Kavanagh?
Irish crack don't smoke itself.

He also said he wanted Conor to fight Frankie Edgar (before the Cowboy fight was announced), so yeah....

Conor can have all the no weight cut fights he wants against light weights at 170.

Khabib wont like that and wont fight him again unless he is in the division winning fights, nobody watching this shit should be happy with it either.

that is probably the last fight dana wants to make. gaethje might actually fuck up the golden boy and end the gravy train . dana has all eyes on khabib.

If Justin were to break him it is not a good thing for one's career
He fucks guys up when he drags them into those wars.

he is also not a big enough name among casuals for dana to risk conor losing.
he would be a big enough name if dana would get conors dick out of his mouth and do his job. dude sucks as a promoter. great fighters all around but you only hear about 2 criminals.

This is major dick-tucking, a former 2 division champion calling out a second non-title fight, if he thinks he's the best, he should be going after the belts, not calling out a non-title-holder 155'er to come up and meet him at 170 a la jon jones
Conor's hand-picking himself easy fights. Love Gaethje, but stylistically this is a terrible match up for him. Just like Cerrone, he's an inferior striker that loves to stand and trade playing right into Conor's hands. At the very least, he could challenge him in Gaethje's natural division, where Conor wont have the weight advantage as well.

Would much rather see Conor man-up and challenge either Masvidal for the BMF, the winner of Tony/Khabib for the 155 belt, or if he really wants to stay at 170, go after Usman or Woodley.

This is just illogical. If they are going for the 155 belt, it makes sense to fight top five 155ers. He's clearly not 'ducking' the Khabib/Tony fight - that's the fight he's aiming for.

The only diva thing about is that he can't be fucked cutting weight but why should he? Gaethtje struggles to make 155, so fighting at 170 makes more sense - it's not like it gives him an advantage over Justin. Weight cutting is weird, we are just used to it. Fighting guys your own size at roughly your natural weight is how it is supposed to work. It's actually fucking retarded for two people the same size to starve themselves to fight at a different weight if they don't have to.

I'd rather see him fight Masvidal but there's nothing wrong with the Gaethje fight.

If Conor wanted and was aiming for Khabib, he could have him. Dana's has already come out and said that's the fight that makes sense and the one he wants to make. Instead they call out a fighter lower in the ranks than himself? I think that's the definition of ducking, he clearly doesn't want Khabib...at least for now.

Everyone knows that when Conor fights at 170 it's just a 155 fight he doesn't cut weight for, nothing new.
Everybody ?

Most casual fans have no fucking clue, they hear the stupid shite McGreg talks and believe it.

Another good point against this shit is Justin doesn't even cut any fuckin weight, McGregor trying to make it out like hes doing these lightweights a favour.

He wants to avoid a few cuts, when he fights Khabib the cut will still be easy but he will have more muscle mass.

It was a joke :p I just parroted what Dana said about Conor fighting Cerrone at 170, and they pulled the same shit when he fought Diaz twice before he got his LW title shot. We are in agreement.

Maybe this will be a new trend which will finally move is closer to getting rid of weight cutting.

big part of fighting in a division is that you weigh-in at that division. Conor can fight whoever he wants but shouldn't have any effect toward the 155 strap even if he beats Gaethje at 170 which most likely he would cuz Dana got his back, and it's horseshit
