Furore in Israel over birth control drugs for Ethiopian Jews

Should gynaecologists need to be told not to give women contraceptive injections without establishing fully informed consent? Of course not. But that is what has happened in Israel after it was revealed in a report by a women's rights organisation that Ethiopian women have been given injections of Depo-Provera without sufficient understanding of the purpose or side effects of the drug. Some Ethiopian women in transit camps were refused entry to the country if they refused the injection, and others wrongly believed they were being inoculated against disease. While Israeli demographers discuss the need to "preserve a clear and undisputed Jewish majority among Israel's total population", it may seem anomalous that women in the Jewish Ethiopian population are forced or coerced into using this highly effective contraceptive method.

Health Ministry Director General Prof. Roni Gamzu has instructed the four health maintenance organizations to stop the practice as a matter of course

In a television exposé by journalist Gal Gabbay, Ethiopian women reported being forced or coerced into receiving inoculations, which in fact turned out to be the long-lasting contraceptive drug Depo-Provera. The Israeli government has so far refused to acknowledge wrongdoing, and in a statement written by the State Comptroller Joseph Shapira, it was stated that there was in fact “no evidence…for the claims raised [and] that shots to prevent pregnancy [were not] administered to Ethiopian women under pressure or threats, overt or covert, in any way that was improper.” The systematic sterilisation of certain groups has historically been used as a weapon of violent discrimination, including during the Holocaust.


So it seems it did happen. Maybe not on an industrial scale. But it happened enough for the Health Minister to issue a directive.

Bottom line is. It did happen.

Nothing changes that.

It’s really fucked up that anyone would be given any inoculation without being informed.

it wasn’t a directive, it was a statement of a matter of course.

I would be interested in investigating the specific doctor or doctors behind the 30 inoculations, personally. Bad apples I says.

Criticism of Israel in it's current form as a racist endeavour is not anti-semitic. Defenders of the Israeli state like to conflate the two and throw around charges of anti-semitism for legitimate criticism.

You are from Texas so I would host you in the summer. First we would spend three days in Tel Aviv. The first day would be to settle in and get used to the time shift. We would settle in at my cousins beach side place in Jaffa, I would take you on a stroll through Old Jaffa and we would visit the market places to see the shops and check out some of my favourite art galleries, all while sampling my favourite bakeries and dessert stands. YUM

the next day we would go surfing at the beach, have lunch in the Livinski Market and then spend the afternoon exploring Rothschild Boulevard. The night would be spent discoing and then with hawt escorts at a beachside hotel. The next day we would sleep I , go to the beach and repeat.

After that we would boogey on up to a kibbutz I know in the Upper Galilee. Visit the lake, tour the Golan heights, spend a day at the Banias and drink some wine. A bit of a country retreat.

then we would boogey on down to Jerusalem. Spend a day seeing the historic sites and a night out in the markets partying.

followed by a day of rest and relaxation at the Dead Sea. The next day we would tour Masada and then bus down to Eilat.

we would spend three days in Eilat, snorkeling and scuba diving, drinking and eating and hiking the desert paths.

after that back to tel Aviv to gather yourself and fly home
