Paul Felder has built a reputation for himself as the gritty, all-action fighter from Philly who put on notable performances for fans. But after a split decision loss to Dan Hooker on Sunday, “The Irish Dragon” is now considering to call it a career.

“That might be it for me,” Felder told Dan Hardy at the Octagon interview. “Man, I got a four-year-old at home that misses me every time I go away like this. I don’t know.

“Congratulations to Dan. I knew this is exactly what I was in for when I came up here to New Zealand. I pissed this guy off, and when you piss off a talented guy like Dan, he’s gonna bring it to you.

“I’ll still go back, I’ll talk to my family, but it’s an absolute honor…

I want to know how much he gets paid commentating compared to fighting. But I suspect this isn't a bad financial decision.

What actually happened: Felder went into a retirement speech only to be interrupted mid-sentence by a spotlight craving Dan Hooker.

Those judges should be considering retirement, they don't know how much their dumb ass hometown decisions fuck up a fighters Career, it was close but Paul Won, could have at least been a draw if they wanted to save face, Hooker fought like a coward most of the fight and that last minute take down did no damage in a round he was clearly losing, just a desperation move to stall the damage he was taking

PlatinumHands @PlatinumHands - confused...was it close, or was it a robbery?

Split Decision seems pretty close to a Draw, IMO.
"could have at least been a draw if they wanted to save face" It was a robbery, a draw wouldn't have been as bad but it still would have been wrong, judges wouldn't have looked like asses tho and Paul wouldnt have felt like hanging them up over it

'robbery' makes me think of Sanchez getting the UD over Kampmann.

this was a close fight in one guy's hometown. I thought Hooker did enough to win, but that's why nobody wins a decision.

The only round that was really close was the 1st the rest were pretty clear cut Paul shoulda had at least 3 on all judges score cards. Hooker had one clear round and Paul had 3. I just think it sucks Felder is probably going to retire over this, he is a hell of a fighter.
Just saying the judges need to get called out, there needs to be some definitive scoring rules.
Leg kicking, running and getting your ass kicked shouldn't ever win a round just because you held on to someone in the last 40 seconds of a fight and didn't do anything else.

FWIW - Hooker also landed more significant head strikes in the fight.

ok, he walked Hokker down on his left calf teh whole fight, dude just go argue with someone else
i'm not arguing, i'm just trying to understand what you saw that convinced you that Felder was winning. He was coming forward, but under the unified rules you only get points for 'octagon control' and 'effective aggressiveness' if the striking and grappling are deemed equal. But striking is determined by who lands more significant strikes (a strike is significant or it's not), and grappling is advantage is determined by attacking or defending takedowns. I don't think Hooker should get any nod for the 'grappling' in the last round, but Felder has a broken face and definitely didn't land more significant strikes in the 5th rd than Hooker...I just didn't see the first 4 rounds as being so decidedly Felder rounds.

don't get me wrong, lots of really experienced MMA fans had it for Felder. I was (probably still am) in the minority thinking that it was going to be a UD/SD for Hooker.

Ok fine treehead, you win, I don't really care anymore, I'm not smart enough to argue for too long without getting mad, and not smart enough to convince you to see what I saw.

I'm actually a Tall Gray, and have no understanding of your species' physical contests.

Finally got to watch it, kept the sound off. Hooker edged round 1, but it was close. I think Felder has a habit of snapping his head back to avoid punches, which is good to avoid punches, but some of the ones he avoided looked like he got nailed and had his head snapped back for him. A couple of the punches I couldn't really tell if he took them or not. Imo whenever they showed Felder from behind, it looked bad for him even when he wasn't getting hit.

Felder took round 2. Again, these are two fast strikers and people have to remember not to really score missed and blocked strikes, but I can see that it may have been tough in the moment live.

Hooker took 3. It was when his face started showing damage, but Felder seemed to stop seeing the lefts coming at him, and Hooker clearly took deliberate advantage of that.

Felder definitely took 4. However, he grabbed the fence. Looked like at least twice.

Felder edged him out in 5 on damage. Also grabbed the fence again briefly, but didn't look like it affected the fight as much. Also whiffed on a few that may have looked like they landed from a different angle because of the way Hooker avoided them, but still took the round imo.

Tough one. Must have been tough to score live. But a lot of fighters question continuing to take damage to the head if they're not getting paid much. Felder made $110,000 that night, less his fight camp cost and taxes, probably not much compared to what he can make if he keeps all his faculties and his family time. It can be really tough to be injured while you have a little one you want to spend time with. I think he's a great fighter and I would enjoy seeing him compete again, but I am totally cool with him giving it up.
