Despite facing heavy criticism after his harsh words on Donald Cerrone’s UFC 246 performance, ESPN’s Stephen A Smith has stood by his comments on “Cowboy.”

Following Cerrone’s 40-second KO loss to Conor McGregor in the main event of UFC 246 last month, Smith said he was “disgusted” by Cerrone’s “atrocious” performance and thinks he “gave up” in the octagon. Some of the biggest names in MMA caught on to Smith’s comments with the likes of Joe Rogan disagreeing and Nate Diaz defending with the broadcaster.

Talking recently on Sirius XM’s “The AK & Barak Show”, Smith discussed his controversial opinion of Cerrone’s fight with McGregor.

Stephen A. Smith doubles down: UFC 246’s ‘bright lights’ were too much for Cerrone

Either a brilliant troll to bring more attention to ESPN MMA, or a total dipshit.

Cowboy has been in big fights before. Stephen is a BB dork that doesn’t know shit about mma, yet willing to run his mouth and double down on stupid.

He’s 3-8 in Main events and 0-4 in title fights in WEC and UFC career
The running away comment to catch breath is stupid. But if Cowboy wasn’t a fan favorite we’d be talking about how he doesn’t show up in his biggest fight.

He's fucking right, MMA fans always used to talk about Cowboy folding in big fights until a ESPN guy said.

People don't talk like that about Faber.

6-8 in Main events
6-7 in title fights

Faber was a 5x defending champ
Plus I’ve heard plenty of people criticize Fabers UFC title fights

Also Cowboy was finished in under a minute in his 2 biggest career fights.

I was specifically referring to Faber's UFC tenure, that being said, yes you hear criticisms but they aren't rampant. Generally he was referred to as "the best fighter never to win a UFC title"

Not in UFC title fights he doesn't.
You are hilariously wrong about both the premise and the substance of your argument, even after you had to move the goalposts.

Faber:

A) Has been called a choker relentlessly. I mean it's pretty much how his UFC career is defined, unfair or not.

B) Has performed better than Cowboy in his biggest fights whether or not we are talking whole career or just UFC. And you arbitrarily moved the goalposts after you realized how flimsy your argument was to make it about the UFC, even though you were responding to MMAHAWK's post which specifically included WEC.

B is irrelevant anyway because of A.

But Faber was at least highly competitive in the first Cruz fight and went to a decision 3/4 times in his UFC title fights. Even in his quick knockout loss, he still lasted longer than Cowboy did in his title fight and the McGregor fight combined.

It's one of the silliest arguments I have ever seen and we are all now dumber for having been subjected to it.

Correction: Cowboy has won 4 main events, not 3. But I think 'main event' is a pretty loose standard. 2 of those wins were against weak competition anyway - Medeiros and Brazilian Cowboy.

I would say the best counter-argument to the 'choker' tag is the Eddie Alvarez win. That was a co-main on a card that had a weak main event but a stacked undercard, including Conor vs Dustin, and it was to welcome Alvarez to the UFC who came in with a lot of hype. It's hard to argue that the pressure wasn't on Cowboy in that spot and he delivered.

You’re right about 4
I’m a cowboy fan and honestly even hate even having this conversation. He’s definitely had some great fights and has entertained for years. I just can’t really hate on Smith for his comments. His fight with Conor didn’t do him any favors in the ESPN era.

If you're brought in specifically to lose and then you spend all pre-fight talking about the 'disrespect' but then get destroyed immediately, you are going to cop it. People just need to accept that and get over it.

I think Smith is just genuinely perplexed at the backlash. I'm glad he is digging in and telling the pearl clutchers to piss off.

It's always nice to be vindicated.

Stephen A is a prime example of the reason I have come to LOATHE the US Sport Entertainment Industry. It is nothing but a negative, attention whore dumpster fire focusing on all the wrong things almost all the time...
