I think in some ways it's like sports or music, some people are just gifted and will excel with some work, some can train hard and be very good, some just decent, and some hopeless.
I didn't get the whole terroir discussion until I tried a wine from my home state. Growing up as a kid there, getting in the mud, grass, bushes, etc...when I opened the bottle and smelled the wine it just took be back and it finally clicked.
I'm amazed by the tops somms that can analyze it down to the year, region,etc..

Well here's another thing.
I am definitely not an expert.
But I can taste a Hungarian white and tell you if the vines were grown on a volcanic shelf.
Hungarian white is the best white.
There are some new Zealand ones that comes close. And guess what. The vines touch volcanic earth.
If you ever get a chance to try Hungarian white you are in for a treat
