Demian Maia’s three fight winning streak came to a halt this past weekend at UFC Brasilia. He found some success on the ground against a fellow jiujitsu world champion in Gilbert Burns, but Maia was eventually clipped by a left hook and finished for the first time as a welterweight.

The 42-year-old knows that his impressive UFC career is coming to a close, and the jiu-jitsu legend wants to face a fellow veteran in his final MMA bout.

“Yes for sure. I want one more [fight] and then probably retire,” Maia told the media, (transcribed by MMA Fighting).

“There’s two guys — one is Diego Sanchez, because he’s been asking for this fight for a long time so I want to fight him…

Giving Diego any fights is strange but I don’t hate that match up for Maia. Cerrone would also be interesting IMO

Maia vs Diego sounds good to me. That fight won't take any years off their lives the way fighting some other opponents would especially fighting Diego at this point. I'll legit miss Maia's walkout with Linkin Park's "Numb" after he retires...

Cerrone fight would be cool.
Diego... I don't really ever want to see fight again.

I think you two are confusing some fictional or past version of Diego Sanchez that has absolutely nothing to do with the actual fighter who exists today - the one that can barely move and who is trained by gay Charles Manson. It is in no way a competitive fight. Diego is as shot as shot can be.

Maia still likely takes Cerrone down and tools him as well. Cowboy has good BJJ but not Gilbert Burns-level BJJ. Maia looked like he was going to maul Burns before Burns pulled off a nice escape too. But at least it's interesting.

He is a promising young up and coming fighter. As long as they don't push him to soon he could be a contender some day.

I don’t disagree but if Diego is going to get a fight, Maia might be his best bet to not take more damage?

I guess, but we just don't want to see Sanchez at all. The damage thing also isn't a guarantee. It's rare that Maia hurts his opponents with GNP but it can happen (he GnPed the shit out of Rory in round 1, for example). A quick KO might honestly be better for Sanchez than someone laying on him for 3 rounds punching him in the head even with light shots.

Just saying Maia and Diego could give the fans a good fight and none pose any threat to take years off the other's life fam...
