Wallace was, for all practical purposes, the governor of Alabama from 1962 to 1968. Once, when a law prevented him from seceding himself he ran his wife Lurleen in his place and she won by a landslide. He's most famous as the belligerent racist voice of the segregationist south.

This scene and the metaphor about the school system is one of the smartest things that was ever done by men in this planet. I wonder how did they come up with that.

"You earned that buck like a motherfucker" hahah that's just priceless.
I've watched the wire a few times

I'm intrigued now. What do you see?

Remember I'm basically a drunk non college educated cunt like McNulty. Which is also a strange coincidence

And he was shot, wound up a paraplegic. Which is the reason I has assumed this thread was about him.

Only Wallace I know that was shot.

The guy is teaching her how to kill people and get away with it without even knowing it, just like the school system is teaching all the kids in the ghetto how to become hopeless pawns in the game without even knowing it. She is also absorbing what he's saying for all the wrong reasons, just like the kids absorb what the school system tells them for all the wrong reasons. Both the guy and the school system are playing their part on perpetuating the endless wire of urban violence without even knowing it; both Snoop and the kids are absorbing all that's wrong in what they're saying and using it to perpetuate violence. Some shit like that.

Every cold opening in the first episode of each season is a big metaphor to the overall theme of the season.

S1 is Snot Boogie and the contradictions of democracy and democratic institutions failing which speaks to the whole series actually;
S2 I don’t remember;
S3 is reform - how the attempt to tear down the projects blows in everyone’s face and how Stringer and Colvin’s attempts at reform blow in their faces;
S4 is Snoop and the school system;
S5 is Bunk with the polygraph gaming the justice trial and McNulty gaming everybody and also a jab at the fake Iraq war - “The bigger the lie, the more they believe it”

Almost couldn't sleep trying to remember S2 cold opening. it´s McNulty bored to death on the police boat looking at all the dead factories around the harbor and talking to his partner about the time their parents and older relatives lost their jobs. Then they are called to rescue a Washington DC boat that has engine problems called "Capitol Gains" where politicians and elite people are having a huge party. He takes a small bribery and they toll the "Capitol Gains" to a spot where the party can go on.

i.e. The working class doing all the work while corrupt politicians and elite capitalists do nothing and reap all the benefits.

Season 2 is just awesome and sneaky like that. it's probably my second favorite after S4. it ties the series together, adds depth the "wire", "all the pieces matter" metaphor and speaks to the broader theme of deindustrialization as the root of social problems in urban cities.

it can't be a coincidence that there is a line by Vondas when he is looking at a closed factory and he says "They used to make steel there, no?". well one of the landmarks of neoliberalism taking control of everything was when "US Steel" changes its name to "USX" and a reporter asked the owner "what the 'X' stands for?"

The answer was "The 'X' stands for money". A huge factory that used to make steel and provide millions of jobs got turned into a business that makes money and only benefits a couple elite capitalists.
