First discovered by some peasents in the Hubei province of China around November 17th, astronomers then re-found the comet named "Atlas" in late December.
Official designated C/2019 Y4, some scholars believe it to be an ancient star called "Wormwood".

It has increased in brightness over 4000 times since discovery, and is said to be gigantic; between the size of Jupiter and the Sun.

It is said it will slingshot around the sun, cork-screwing in trajectory and passing by the earth later this month at 10's of thousands of KMH.

It is a deep green color, and is currently visible by binoculars, and at its brightest, could be as bright as the moon, even if it breaks up into thousands of smaller city-size chunks.
If all goes well, it should have a Summer resurgence in June as it completes its orbit.

In unrelated news, the richest families in the world have decided to rent all the now-vacant cruise lines for the next few months to catch a glimpse of the phenomenon from an ocean view.

If you can find Orion's belt and Polaris (the star at the end of the Little Dipper) - that's about where it is right now

This particular comet won't be back again for another 6,025 years. Give or take.

As it gets closer to the sun and reacts to the heat (comets release more and more gases as they get closer to the Sun) - it should eventually be as bright as Venus (when dusk/dawn hits and there is only one "star" visible in the sky - it's usually the planet Venus as it is the brightest in our night sky).

This means Comet Atlas would be easily visible with the naked eye and leave people who are familiar with star positioning wondering "What the fuck is that?" when they see something so bright that isn't usually there - and it will change positioning a little bit more every night.

There are recordings of this comet being witnessed by Egyptian farmers 4000 BC.

I don't suppose that you are referring to that stuff in Revelations (if I remember correctly) about "a star named Wormwood"?

Something to do with it being a sign of the end times?

I heard a ton of theories back in the day regarding Chernobyl, which apparently translates to wormwood, being that same sign.

If that is what you are referring to, I will file it away with all the other "the end is nigh" theories, such as the 2012 Mayan one.

Source on this part? If true, could be the rich folks seasteading experiment begins in earnest.

if this fucker happens to hit it will do damage
The closest it will come to Earth is about 70 million miles. Comets can be unpredictable - like a blown up balloon let go without tying the knot - but I think we're good.

It's nowhere near the size of Jupiter. Not sure where that came from. It's about 2 or 3 miles wide. Jupiter is 87,000 miles wide.
Maybe they are including the gaseous tail, which can be very long - and the closer it gets to our Sun the longer it gets.

There are two bodies coming afaik.
One is Atlas, one is an asteroid between 1.1-3.3 mi wide.

I watched the movie 2012 last night.
I couldn't help but throw that in.

And remember, you will have 48 hours notice.
I just thought it coincidental that this hit cruise lines in December, they "found" the comet in December, they emptied cruise lines then quarantined cities.
But that's our job here, to think outside the box.

Funny KB made me think of the 2012 movie.

"They're selling tickets to ships, $1 billion a piece."

If the comet is on the trajectory they say, and the aura is SO massive they cannot precisely identify its size, the aura itself signifies its possible volatility, or weakness.
So more/as concerning than the trajectory, would be its specific gravity & fracture likeliness.
If it is as large as said, and grows this bright, and is heading for & escaping the sun, it could blister into a million city-size meteors that might be looking for a new gravity, on its way OUT, from the sun...

Yes, I am.
But I made the wormwood part up.

pretty crazy stuff

I know what the data says, but i really don't trust the data most of the time

and if it was headed right for us we for sure wouldn't be notified in an official capacity

Enjoy the moment has been my MO for years and will continue to be how I roll

Wonder if it is made of Gold or something cool?
Maybe Bruce Willis can catch a ride on it?

Woody's character on 2012 is damn funny, that is all I know for sure.

pretty sure that will throw the trajectory off by a bit...who knows where she is headed now
