Conor McGregor vs. Anderson Silva???
Maybe.
The Irishman says he "accepts" a fight challenge from Spider -- but that doesn't mean you'll see them in the Octagon anytime soon.
Here's the deal ... Anderson posted a statement on social media late Wednesday night calling for a superfight with Conor at a 176-pound catchweight.
"I have immense admiration for the great athlete that Conor is and I believe that a super fight would go down in the history of the sport," Silva said ... "neither of us need to prove anything to anyone."
"I believe that fans of the UFC and of this sport would like to watch this great martial arts spectacle, it would be fantastic to test my martial arts skills against him!!"
McGregor saw the post and commented -- "I accept."
It's a good start -- but obviously, the UFC would also need to get on board ... and Dana White has previously said there are other fights for Conor that are higher on the priority list.
Conor vs. Khabib. Conor vs. Nate Diaz. Conor vs. Justin Gaethje. Conor vs. Tony Ferguson.
Everything seems to be on the table -- then again, Conor vs. Spider could be great too!
In fact,. Silva's been angling for McGregor since 2019 -- telling TMZ Sports on video he was pushing the UFC to get a deal done.

THE RIGHT FIGHT FOR UFCTMZSports.com
Earlier this week, Conor explained why he thinks Silva should go down as the greatest UFC fighter ever ... above stars like Jon Jones, Amanda Nunes, Henry Cejudo, Khabib and even himself, (he ranked himself at #2).
45-year-old Silva is obviously a legend -- but he's lost 4 of his last 5 fights.
So, will it happen?
Stay tuned ...

If it's a choice between Anderson Silva, who's a decade past his prime, in his mid-40s, and hasn't fought in over a year, or a rematch with Floyd, who is a decade past his prime, in his 40s, and hasn't fought a legit boxer in 5 years, then I like the Silva matchup. If for no other reason than they're both in the same sport, and it's a better look to fight a bigger opponent and lose than it is to get stopped by a guy you're 20 pounds heavier than, and in his 40s.

Normally I would be against this, but we are not living in normal times at the moment. Bring on the freak shows! With no fans in attendance, camps closed for training, travel restrictions preventing some fighters from competing, this is the perfect time to play to the entertainment side of the sport. It reminds me of some Pride events or Rizin NYE cards, which are extremely fun.

Nobody else finds it depressing to see the once great Anderson calling out an overrated featherweight?

Anderson loves fighting. I find it pretty cool, although I feel ya on how it's awkward to call out people in lower weight classes

but I'd imagine that conor has claimed to be able to beat Anderson before, and if so, then the "calling out the smaller guy" negative goes out the window for me. you play with fire, you gonna get burned, loudmouf mcgregor

Yeah, I remember that. Seemed kinda ridiculous to me then too. Apparently most people are on board though.

I just can't get past the idea that Anderson used to be legitimately unstoppable, could've easily been the first two division champ at one point. Makes me sad to see him reduced to calling out a far smaller fighter, with no title defenses ever, for a goofy money fight.

And to think that it might even be competitive too. Jesus Christ, how the mighty have fallen.

But what do I know...

yeah this fight never takes place. conor calls someone out every week and none of that ever happens either .dana wont be throwing away a conor mcgregor fight on a no fans venue when he can just wait and collect a 15 million dollar live gate

This fight will never happen. A bloated old Andy would still beat Conor. He will be much bigger and have 3 inches of reach. Even though he has slowed tremendously, he can still get out of the way of the left hand.

As long as his leg doesn't fall off again, it would be an easy fight.

Also, the UFC would not risk having their cash cow get beat up by an old man that has no shot at winning anymore belts.

He has always gone after guys in lower weight classes. He called out GSP multiple times but refused to fight the Jones because they were 'friends'.

I doubt this would ever happen.

McGregor needs to focus on the champs in his division.
Anderson needs to focus on a fight he can win - although this might be one of them.

I think he has a real chance at beating The Chris if they fight again.
