COVID-19: Canada toughens border rules for Americans driving to Alaska

Beginning Friday, all foreign nationals aiming to drive through Canada to the northernmost U.S. state for non-discretionary purposes, such as work or going to a primary residence, will be restricted to crossing at one of five CBSA border entries: Abbotsford-Huntingdon, Osoyoos and Kingsgate in B.C.; Coutts in Alberta; and North Portal in Saskatchewan.

Alaska-bound travellers who arrive at non-designated border crossings will be denied entry, the CBSA said.

Motorists must travel through Canada using the most direct route to Alaska, avoiding national parks and tourist sites, and are required to hang a tag from rear-view mirror that includes the date they must depart Canada.

Before entering Alaska, they will also be required to report to the nearest CBSA border point of entry to confirm their exit from Canada.

The CBSA said the measures are being put in place to further reduce the risk of introduction and spread of COVID-19 by minimizing the amount of time in-transit travellers are in Canada.

The border agency said its officers have the final decision on whether travellers meet the requirements for entry into Canada.

“Travellers are encouraged to have documentation that will demonstrate their purpose of travel,” the agency said in a release.

Following admission into Canada, travellers are given a handout telling them they must avoid contact with others while in transit, remain in their vehicle as much as possible and should pay for gas at the pump and use drive-thru options for food.

They are told not to make any unnecessary stops and to wear a mask or face covering.

The CBSA said failure to comply with the current border restrictions is an offence under the Quarantine Act and could lead to up to $750,000 in fines, and/or imprisonment of up to six months.

Premier John Horgan, who earlier this month expressed concerns that some Alaska-bound travellers were enjoying the “sights and sounds of British Columbia” instead of travelling straight to their destination, welcomes the tighter regulations.

About fucking time. I have seen about a dozen American license plates on the island so far this summer. No reason anyone driving to Alaska needs to be on the island with kayaks and bikes in tow.

You can tell how long someone has been in the country and why they might be there just by looking at their car? Neat.

What? You don't think taking the tsawwassen to departure bay ferry, driving 7 hours up island to take the port hardy/prince rupert ferry, with a couple stops in bella bella and klemtu.
Before finally heading north to Alaska is practical?

Now I am reading of an aluminum can shortage? Wtf you'd think all these resources would be in an abundance during a pandemic.

I am not much of a conspiracy kinda person but its getting difficult to not start thinking that way

If anyone wants a cold, unvarnished demonstration of how completely incapable of making good decisions our government is. They've chosen today to announce they're ditching CERB. I do acknowledge that this is intended to be a public pleaser and over shadow Thursday's public shaming, but fuck, are these people serious?

Almost 13,000 people refused entry to Canada from U.S. during pandemic
Nearly 13,000 travellers have been denied entry to Canada from the U.S. since border restrictions were put in place in March.

Between March 22 and July 22, a total of 12,997 foreign nationals were not allowed to enter Canada, as their travel was deemed non-essential, according to data requested by the Richmond News from the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA).

Canada adds 418,500 jobs, recouping 55% of COVID losses
Employment rose by 418,500 in July, bringing to 1.7 million the number of jobs reclaimed over the past three months. Canada lost 3 million jobs in March and April at the height of the pandemic. The employment rebound in Canada has outpaced the U.S., which has recovered 42 per cent of its payroll losses.

If the conflict of interest screen set up by PMO between Telford, Silver and MCAP doesn’t appear on the Conflict of Interest and Ethics Commissioner’s (CIE) public registry, it’s because it was voluntarily put up by the prime minister’s staff after Commissioner Mario Dion’s office determined a formal screen was not necessary, an email provided by PMO shows.
