Noooooo!!!! Fuck no!

I just lost General Sherman! It was right out of The Simpsons. My wife called me when I was on the kayak and I told her that I’d be home in an hour. Just after I hang up, I get a bite that bends my rod in half. The fish surfaces and I see that it is a HUGE carp. I’m reeling in, but the carp takes off and is just pulling out line. The thing is pulling me and the kayak. I know it’s going to be nearly impossible to get this huge fish in the kayak so I resign myself to let him tire himself out. I reel and he pulls out twice as much line. I’m not lying when I say this goes on for half an hour. Finally I feel him tire and I start to work him back towards the kayak. I get him up close to the kayak and I see how big he is. The thing is 30 pounds and he’s still fighting. He’s too big for my net and there’s no way I could lift this thing in to my kayak without flipping it. I’m trying to get it close enough to the kayak to take a picture of him before I cut my line. Then I hear the voices of my haterz saying “It doesn’t count if you don’t get him in the boat”, and my warrior spirit takes over and I decide to try to beach the fish. I’m in the middle of the lake, and it’s windy as hell. I start paddling the kayak with one arm while I hold the rod with the other. I drag this fish across the lake into the wind, paddling with one arm. It takes me half on hour to get to shore. I run the kayak onto the rocks and jump out. I’m thigh deep in water and now I’m reeling the fish in, he’s beat. I’m exhausted and both of my shoulders are burning. I’m laughing now. I’m writing my victory post in my head. I’m titling my new avatar. The fish is splashing around in 3ft of water, I walk out and I’m feeling around for his gill. Then the carp whips it’s head, the hook goes flying, the carp flips his tail and I watch him disappear.

It was an hour long metaphysical battle, one of humankind’s greatest warriors, against a mythical monster carp. Who won?... I don’t know if there’s an answer to that. I know one thing for sure, that carp is going to be awfully sore in the morning.

What do you mean "Who won?"

Did you land him?

No?

Then you didn't catch him.

Carl the Carp is telling all his buddies at the bottom of the lake how he punked your bitch ass.

jokes. Cool story. Love those moments

Just horrible luck. Today’s spot was a bit of a bust. The water level was about 5 feet lower than usual. I had to really go a fair way to find water deep enough to fish. I was using a jointed rapala, because there are salmon running in the area so I figured I’d try something bass or salmon might bite. Then I moved over to the shore line and used a tube jig to try to see if I could catch a bass. That’s where I hooked the carp. I actually see why people like fishing them now, it fought like hell. It pulled me about 150 metres from where I hooked it and then it was still fighting after I dragged it to shore.

The new rod and reel is awesome. It’s night and day. Using the jointed Rapala I could feel the movement of the lure, and differences in movement with different speeds of retrieval. I could even feel if I bumped bottom, I could even feel if I dragged it through a weed. It was a completely different way to fish. You get so much more information about what’s going on with your set up. I’m going to try more drop shot rigging now.

Having nice equipment makes it so much more enjoyable. My brother is using an old fly rod that his FIL gave him. I told him to try mine which really is just a mid tier but only a few months old and he couldn’t believe it.

You ever consider a little anchor for your yak? Think it would’ve helped there?

For the money, imo, the ugly stick graphite rods can't be beat.

I’ve looked into them. There are some pretty cheap and simple ones you can make yourself. It would definitely help me at times. But I’m just trying to keep my set up simple. My kayak is a tight fit for fishing as it is, I don’t want another piece of gear to mess around with. If I really like a place, I can usually find a sand bar, logs, or weeds to settle into.

Check out a small collapsible grappling hook anchor. You can keep it next to or behind your seat and just toss it out
