Is there still a debate over whether MMA (or more accurately, the UFC) has crossed over into the mainstream? Conor is arguably one of the biggest global sports stars. This fight is being advertised by the biggest name in sports, ESPN. The promo uses the music of one of the most popular artists in the world, Eminem. To say that another way..., the biggest artist in the world is sharing a promo from the biggest sports channel in the world to promote a fight with the biggest sports star in the wold. Plus all the high schoolers and college kids follow at least the big names. I’d say by any objective standard Conor has obviously transcended from sport to mainstream culture and I’d argue the UFC has reached the bar as well.

It is not mainstream.

Out of my entire network of friends family and work . Myself and my two cousins are the only ones who occasionally watch lol

Ask the rest of them and they will say something about John St pierre or the Brazilian black guy lol

Mma is NOT mainstream

You say world or global a lot, I can at least tell you it's not big here in Germany at all. Few people know what the UFC is, and maybe some at most would recognize mcgregor.
ESPN is not a thing here either.

But Eminem is well known.

Yeah, out of all my friends and relatives, like 40 people, I know one guy who was pretty into mma, and he got sick and quit watching almost a year ago

compared to the days when you had to wait until UFC came out on VHS, and they were in the same section as "Faces of Death", I'd say UFC is SUPER-mainstream.

First, was that really your key takeaway from the thread? ??
Second, he is the best selling rapper of all time so why did the “biggest artist” label get the “Different Strokes” treatment?

Wow, ok. The line prior says “one of the.” The statement you quoted was meant for emphasis. Apologies for not being literal with every word of a sentence that was not intended to be a focal point. Eminem is the biggest selling RAP artist of all time.
Eminem is popular, ESPN is popular, Conor is popular. Feel free to use whatever descriptors you prefer. Now let’s get out of the weeds and get back to the topic of discussion... do you believe UFC has crossed into the mainstream or just Conor as a pop figure, or none of the above?

Eh, this random argument piqued my curiosity so I looked it up. In terms of certified sales he's 3rd behind the Beatles and...kill us all...Rihanna.

A few more like Elvis and Michael Jackson would be higher selling too but they can't verify all the sales.

But still, it's not like it was an outrageous claim.

It’s not full mainstream, but it’s caught some posers
I just listen to people around me at Buffalo twat wings and they’re out there.
“Hey cletus, you should have fought in the ufc”. “Yeah, doesn’t pay enough for me”
Ok, it’s real easy like you can just walk in because you got in a street fight once and don’t think you’d get touched.
Please do try it cletus, please, go to a local show and busted the fuck up
