Classic performance there. Prince was a super slick guitarist, and one hell of a performer. Although most probably think of him primarily as a singer or songwriter, had some really, really good chops on the guitar

He’s somehow one of the most underrated guitar players of all time. I just don’t get it.

The big question is where did that guitar go at the end? Just threw it into the air.

Not sure he was underrated. He was widely regarded to be the greatest guitarist on earth for most of his career.
Was he? I certainly hope so. Just seems like every time I hear historians or music experts talking about the GOAT's, his name is never mentioned. Hell. here's Rolling Stones Top 100 and they have him rated #33.

Backstory on the video in my OP is this list came out from Rolling Stone before this performance & really pissed Prince off and gave him some added motivation to fuck that solo up.

His SB halftime show is also the greatest of all-time.

This might be one of those times where the white world is reporting on things a bit differently. I think the most important thing was musicians knew and they all bowed down.

There's a famous story that's apocryphal and probably didn't happen, but supposedly in an interview someone asked Eric Clapton what it was like to be the world's best guitarist and he said "I don't know. Ask Prince."

Edit: turns out that story is made up, but the plausibility of it is partly because of how highly regarded he was. Eric Clapton's Prince | Snopes.com

D'Angelo, Raphael Saadiq, Lauryn Hill, James Brown, John Mayer, and so many others genuflected at the enormity of his skill on the guitar.

He definitely deserves the respect and accolades from his peers. The man played damn near every instrument, and was expert level at them all. Just an amazing talent.

This is one of my favorite guitar solos of all time. Absolutely blistering. If I'm not mistaken this was the rock n roll hall of fame induction when Prince, George Harrison and Tom Petty were all inducted on the same night.

The story I've always heard is that Prince was pissed about that Rolling Stone article and didn't really play the whole solo in rehearsals, so no one knew what he was planning.

kneeblock @kneeblock is right, most white fans know Prince for his song-writing and spectacle, but even in his biggest hits you can hear his virtuoso guitar work- the intro and outro to When Doves Cry is a great example.

Read the same thing buddy. Prince rehearsed that solo by himself so no one else on stage knew what he was going to play. That's why I think Dhani Harrison looked so excited when Prince was about to play.

Then the magic happened. What a performance. Prince stole the show in a matter of 60 seconds.

Among guitarists he got his due praise, but most fans of his music had no idea he was such a virtuoso. Many people don't care about that stuff - they just liked his music.

Same thing with John Mayer to some extent. Brad Paisley is another one that falls into that category.

@Splinty - as far as where the guitar went, his guitar tech caught it. Prince did that from time to time.

Absolutely amazing performance in this clip. When you have professional musicians look on in amazement - that's all you need to know.

Other guitarists certainly knew what was up, but as for the rest of the masses I'd bet it had more to do with him being a virtuoso in EVERYTHING. Songwriting. Vocals. Phrasing. Guitar. They were all on point - and they all meshed together perfectly. And Prince's songs weren't always guitar heavy so he got praise for his entire body of work instead of just the guitar.

Most "guitar gods" are riff 1st, song 2nd. (Jimi. EVH, etc).

Knopfler (Dire Straits) would be an example of a guy who, like Prince, has his guitar skill overlooked by regular fans of music because his body of work was more about the songs than showing off his guitar chops.

Good call- Knopfler is a god.
