Let’s talk about training.

Due to the pandemic many gyms are closed. How do you practice your martial art/contact sport while at home? Do you train with a partner? Also what are your options, if you need to be isolated completely alone. If you are not actually training in the art/sport, then what conditioning exercises will you do that develop you as a martial artist?

I know the training varies, it depends what martial art you are practicing, but I am interested in all the different experiences. For example, training in striking arts is quite easily imaginable, but what about grappling? Also looking for new interesting training ideas.

I own a gym and have elite athlete status, so it's not so bad for me. Probably not the answer you're looking for.

If I did not own a gym, I would put up a pull bar and gymnastic rings at home (which I have also done).

Kickboxing
I was always taught shadowboxing is the best striking training you can do solo. I decided pretty early on to record my workouts and review the tape. Most of us can point out poor technique on video, but have a hard time feeling it in the moment, so recording helps. It's awkward at first and feels weird watching yourself, but I've been able to pinpoint a lot of different things I'm doing wrong by watching tape on myself. I also have a bunch of different bags I can train with and got more during the pandemic:
  • thai bag
  • slip bag
  • double-end bag
  • wrecking ball bag
Grappling
This is obviously much harder. Last April I figured it was going to be at least a year until gyms would be safe, so I built a grappling dummy. I probably OVER-BUILT it to be honest, but it has helped me TREMENDOUSLY. Obviously there are things you can't do with a dummy, but I've found ways to train even those things. Guard work, top attacks, guard-passing, chaining, even some escapes are possible to drill. I drill endlessly on that thing.

I spent a decent amount of time planning and building it, and initially I was interested in leg attacks, but I think I'm going to actually do a rebuild to add cables allowing the limbs to spring back to position, add weight, etc.

It's worth noting I did get to roll a bit with some friends here and there during the lockdown and everything I was working did translate. I tend to be a really slow learner when it comes to physical technique, so I'll probably continue to use it to drill on even after my gym opens back up and I can train normally.

Pros: Southpaw stance drill from natural orthodox athlete;
Old style radio and cactus in the background;
Swiftly pulling back at the point of impact and landing with the toes to avoid wrecking furniture;
Social style socks to help with pivot;

Cons: Punch technique has been wrecked from 1+ year without hitting an actual target;

Need to turn your hips more on those roundhouses. Also your punches need more snap dont count until it's back on defense on your chin.

Try a Jab Straight Hook with Head Kick combo.

Solid work.
Stay fundamental and practice control and positioning.

Thanks for your input dog. it’s really hard to throw a proper round kick in that tight space. I can’t really let it go as it feels like I’ll hit something - a mirror, a cat, my mother in law...

it is even worse with high kicks. I think I would need to be much more flexible to throw a controlled high kick in that room. Most I could come up with is an ugly upward kick with limited pivot. Feels like I can only throw a real hard high kick or not throw at all.

with punches I have never been any good but the pandemic ruined it. I had one session with a real coach in over an year and it didn’t feel that bad hitting the pads. we did some light sparring as well and it was reasonably passable but punches in shadowboxing is the ultimate big worst part of of all training for me. I would probably need to stand in front of a mirror and throw sets of endless slow controlled technical punches gradually working on speed. But who has the discipline to do that?

At that time, I just prefer to do running on the treadmill or do simple push-ups. Thank God that now I have the facility to go to my gym:).

It really sounds not good that training at home if you are talking about workouts at home and other things then yes you can do this at home but if you are serious about this really wanted to be professional and best martial arts you should join a school or gym they trained you very well. When you think now I can do myself then training at home.
