Well, they made him look as much like a Chinese caricature as possible and then called him a tourist. Seems pretty cut and dry to me.
So how are you supposed to draw Asian people?
I don’t see this as a racist depiction of an Asian man. Now the joke in the comic, the more I think about it, yeah that’s insensitive. Is it fucked up? In my opinion, no. It’s just a joke that bombed.

You are consistently wrong tbf though.

I can think of many ways of making him look more of a caricature.

I think you are seeing things wrongly.

Again.

I'd think the goal would be to look like the subject rather than just "Asian". On the topic, when I think "Asian" I don't automatically think "Chinese"

You say "insensitive" I say "fucked up". You're certainly entitled to your opinion.

Someone who is a blow in.

Using New York City as a platform to further himself.

Not someone who rides the mass transit system. Not someone who doesn't have a job new York.
The cartoon is a commentary on recent comments from the other day where Yang said his favorite Subway stop was times square

This is a tourist destination and the average New Yorker hates it... Or at least they act like they hate it as "not real new York".

These are the comments that have New Yorkers asking if yang is a "real new Yorker".
On top of this party politics once again to weigh in on things that he has been uncomfortable doing even during the presidential primary, mostly around specific social causes and minority groups. This along with him leaving the city during the pandemic to his second home gives the appearance that he's out of touch with the average New Yorker even though that seems mostly to be a trope by people that would already vote against him and are taking advantage of the situation.

For what it's worth I don't think the cartoon is meant to draw a caricature and I don't think tourist is related to something like him not being American enough.
I think it's a direct result of the comments about that particular subway station and people commenting that he's basically a tourist from it. I'm also not totally surprised that people would see this cartoon and think it heavy handed and draw the wrong conclusions that was meant to be racist.

That's what I got. In relation to the tourist tag line.

He's been missing during the lockdown.

Now he's emerged. I wasn't aware of the times square quotes.

He isnt someone that will win hearts and minds of real new yorkers.

Didn't see the cartoon as racist even with my basic understanding.
