Isn't that where Bloodsport was set?pretty trippy I just saw a youtube video on this subject today. reminds me of the village in bloodsport.
Not on here. I've discussed it on podcasts and in interviews. Not much to say really, I was an aggressive kid, got in a lot of fights, liked to train. Visited family in Vancouver and they had the beginnings of a NHB/MMA scene and I jumped at the chance to fight for money and not get arrested.@Leigh
Don't want to derail this thread....
Have you ever done an AMA about how you got into competing/fighting/ MMA?
I have more questions. Not on here. I've discussed it on podcasts and in interviews. Not much to say really, I was an aggressive kid, got in a lot of fights, liked to train. Big Circle IS a Triad.Ask him why the Big Circle Gang is so much more bad ass than the Triads
brrrrrt brrrrrrt

Not really but it got flooded a lot (see below). Never any big building collapses or fuck all (his words).the structures were just on top of each other without code.
were there ever any building collapses ?
YesPrince Philip once said, "If it has got four legs and it is not a chair, if it has got two wings and it flies but is not an aeroplane, and if it swims and it is not a submarine, the Cantonese will eat it."
Does your dad agree with this assessment?
NoWere there elevators in the tall buildings?
No, a lot of the houses were on stilts and people just moved to the top floors. It was more of an inconvenience. You mentioned flooding leading to chest-high water.
Did people die every time there was a flood? Were most people there able to swim?
Yes, they had everything in there. Illegal doctors, dentists, brothels, drugs, EVERYTHING. Even my cobbler. The police had to apply through the Secretary of Chinese Affairs for permission to mount any sort of raid into the Walled City, so everyone got told before the cops turned up. It was all for show.Did they have illegal fight clubs?
Nothing to do with the Walled City but in Chinese society, they generally assume that fairer skin was of the educated class and darker skin was assumed to be coolies.were there prejudices among Chinese based on the lightness or darkness of their skin? (a very light-skinned, rich as hell, 1st generation New York girl said there was, in shame)
Oh yeah, if you weren't familiar you couldn't get through it. You'd get lost.@Leigh
Was it tricky trying to find your way around the maze like structure?
We’re certain areas no go zones for reasons like gang territory or everyone get along ok?
(I liked this question - Leigh)As the residents of the walled city were all technically squatters, does this mean no one paid rent? Given the absence of police, what was to stop someone from completely overtaking another person's residence by force? Did the triads play any part in basic law and order?
Explains the surnamePortugese. My grandfather was from Macau
You accusing him of juicing??Explains the surname
Remedios in Portuguese is remedys or a way to say meds.
if you’re going to get meds from a pharmacy you say you’re going to get the “remedios”
Ah so they’re both pussies. Nice.Big Circle IS a Triad.
There are basically four big triad groups:
Big Circle
14K
Big Four
Sun Yee On. My dad was a member of this triad and they ran the Walled City.
Big Circle was a new group that formed from ex China refugees that were ex military.
Did your family come to Canada before moving to the UK to hide your tracks? Was your dad a wanted man by the law? Did he have any formal martial arts training or more of a weapons guy?Big Circle IS a Triad.

Our triad ran the Walled City, simple as that. No other triad was allowed in.
(I liked this question - Leigh)
No, everyone was looked after by the Triad. They paid rent or anything like that to the Triad. The main reason was that they claimed allegiance to Communist China, so the British government didn't have a lot of jurisdiction in there.
No, my dad's family was pretty posh; his father was a bank manager. My mum's father was an English engineer, stationed in Hong Kong. Both of parents were the black sheep, I guess. My dad's family moved to Vancouver as professionals for improved lifestyle.Did your family come to Canada before moving to the UK to hide your tracks? Was your dad a wanted man by the law? I’d stand in line to buy a ticket to his action biography on the big screen. Pretty impressive he’s lived such a crazy life is still around to answer some questions. Tell him thanks for me. Tell him @Lars thinks he’s a pussy.

My dad was arrested a few times. I don't want to go into details but he fucked some people up pretty badly. Like, his charges may change depending on what happens to the victims, bad. My dad and I once beat a guy really badly at a Vancouver gas station, I think I posted about it here before. We were literally waking him up and knocking him out again.
He did have some martial arts training but has zero interest in fighting "fair". I don't mean he'll kick in the balls or bite or eye gouge, I mean he'll talk you down, then stab you in the kidney when you turn around. He's a genuinely friendly guy who will joke and laugh with you. If you fuck with him, he is incredibly violent and really has a "no fucks" mindset.

Remember... Diu lay? This will give you the best info on that. Kowloon Walled City - Wikipedia
I will ask him.
I will ask.
Relatively. My mum has throat and lung cancer that wasn't diagnosed due to covid overwhelming our health system. A life time of smoking and doing other drugs. She was initially considered terminal but she's responding well to treatment and will hopefully be ok.
My dad had the capacity to be successful and could stay clean for a decade at a time, working his way into managerial roles at companies but gets drawn back in to the lifestyle, which sabotages him. He's retired now and seems to be doing well.
I cannot speak Cantonese. I asked my dad why he never taught me and he said I couldn't even speak English. I can sing a kids number song and swear. I was last there in 2004.
Pronounced "die oo lay" ?F. You in Cantonese
