For the past 6 years I’ve been telling my wife that I think we should take a class to learn gun safety, and purchase a few guns for home protection/hunting. I really started bringing this up a lot more since around May 2020 when shit really started getting crazy here in Portland. Now in July of 2021 after record numbers of shootings, stabbings, muggings, almost half of the police force going away, I finally have my wife on board.

We will be going to a class starting August 13th to start learning proper safety and technique. We don’t have a gun yet and we don’t need one for the class. But you can sure as shit know I’m going to be buying one after the first class. Where the hell do I start?

I have aspirations to learn how to hunt deer/elk in Oregon and Washington, and I was told a 30-06 rifle would be well suited for that, but I’m more interested in the home protection part first, since we still are living in Portland. A rifle would obviously be able to protect my family from an intruder, but seems a bit cumbersome as opposed to a hand gun. Maybe I’m wrong about that.

I know there’s a lot of you here that are very knowledgeable about firearms, so please, help me out. Point us in the right direction.

Home defense and hunting are going to be 2 pretty different animals.

You got kids around the house TheFifthScallop @Thefifthscallop ?
No kids in the home, and never will be. Just my wife, my dog and myself. Like I said, I have aspirations for hunting and home defense, so I assume there is a need for a few types of firearms. I don’t go trout fishing with my salmon/steelhead rod. I need the right tool for the job.

I don’t know why that makes me laugh. I’m not trying to join a “militia”.
Best gun I ever shot. I was worried it would kick based off my experience playing video games. It hit wherever I pointed it. Better than m4 or any other rifle I shot.

Pistol wise I can't recommend any. For me it would be the heaviest for when I throw it at them.

For home defense pretty much any 9mm pistol will get the job done. If you're worried about the gun being secured, get something like a Hornady rapid safe on, or in the night stand. They run on RFID so it keeps it secure without hindering your access when you need it. I like SIG's but a Glock 17 is more or less the gold standard of 9mm pistols. Either gun should be reliable, and then train, train, train, train, train.

For hunting you're heading in the right direction with a 30-06.

The best thing to do is to go check out a few different guns and see what you think of them. I would check out The Honest Outlaw on you tube for a good review of anything you might be interested in or maybe just to check out some different makes and models. The one mistake most people make when buying a gun for a woman is getting a small framed pistol. Sure they are easily concealed and might seem fitting for a woman but they are notoriously snappy and can be uncomfortable to shoot.
9mm is a popular round for good reason. Recoil isn’t bad and lot of choices for defense rounds.
40 s&w incredibly snappy and some folks have trouble with that.
.45 acp is a hell of a round, some folks love and some hate it.
It all comes down to personal preference and what you find comfortable. Also, what you want to spend as well.

I was gonna recommend the CZ P10C but the Glock 17 is a very nice substitute.

Actually I changed my mind. Get her a bolt action 1908 swedish Mauser. That fucker does kick but it's over 100 years old and proven in world wars. Easily able to stop a modern day burglar

My grandpa used a Polish 8mm Mauser to hunt deer for years. Quite the round.

Why do you hate children so much?
It’s not that I hate children. I grew up surfing next to a nuclear power plant through my formative years. I assume I’m shooting blanks anyway. That being said, my wife and I both have mental illnesses in our genome. It would honestly be very irresponsible for us to have children. Not to mention, I’m selfish.

It sounds to me like you're depriving the good people of 2072 their next U.S. president.

I don't own any Glocks, but I often recommend them. They're reasonably inexpensive, they're widely available, they're dead nuts reliable and it's easy to get extra mags. Gold standard for a reason.
I have a couple and you’re right. Glocks are solid and accessories are easy to find.

It was a silly personal question I shouldn't have asked or joked about. Apologies.

And I don't think you're selfish, in this regard at least. if you were truly selfish, you'd have kids anyway because you wanted them.

I've had a couple. I've bought and sold a lot of guns over the years and don't often regret it, but there are 2 I wish I'd kept. One of them was a Glock 17 RTF2.
Had to google it. Is the curved serrations the only difference? Not a fan of the Gen3 mag release either.
Trying not to shit up TheFifthScallop @Thefifthscallop ’s thread though.

My ex brother in law has an Ruger American Predator rifle and it’s inexpensive and shoots really well. Might serve you well for hunting. They’re pretty light too, so good for long hikes.

Most of them just come with regular serrations as oppose to the fish gills. The main difference is the texturing on the grip. I always replaced my Glock Mag releases with the tangodown versions anyways.

Sorry, TheFifthScallop @Thefifthscallop granted you might find some of this information valuable anyways.

Not to pry into personal lives, but if either of you only have one hand I'd recommend an Uzi. I see Arnold Schwarzenegger killing mother fuckers like that all the time.

revolvers make good first firearm, especially for women. You can get a .357 and load it with .38 wadcutters for practice.
in a smaller/medium frame, it's still concealable.
If you don't plan on taking it out of the home for protection, then a carbine rifle or pistol-caliber carbine (AR-15 for example) would probably be a better choice.

If you don't want to take it out of the house for protection and want maximum versatility, a shotgun may suit you.
