I start on Monday, at 59yo I have a lot of time on my hands now and thought why not

a little nervous, zero cardio over the years so i'll probably puke inside 15 minutes but I'm excited

be 15m early, have impeccable hygiene. (cut your nails, brush your teeth, take a shower BEFORE class. )

smile a lot and say Thanks as much as you can.
24 years ago I owned a TKD school for 7 years, closed it when I got married and had kids. We needed health insurance once we started to have kids so I walked away and returned to engineering

to me this is a no brainer, how anyone could NOT do any of the things you listed is beyond me

I
Certified Training Academy...a Gracie University affiliate.

best program for beginners, bar none.
they'll do 2 weeks free, I can contact them and let them know you're coming.
I need to honor the appointment I have scheduled for next Monday

but I would be interested in setting something up

Last night went well, I'm still alive, have all my limbs intact and didn't throw up!
When I arrived they gave me a tour along with a bit of small talk about the facility. Gave me a gi explained Gracie Combatives system to me asked about my experience (i do have some, all be it is limited)
I worked with Colton (he's a knowledgeable guy and one of their blue belts)
Colton demonstrated the Gracie Combatives 1st Self defense technique, I did it a few times then he demoed a little variation and tweaked my technique a bit.

The combatives program seems like a good place to start for self defense and or beginners or someone that has never been in a fight. It's a different approach.

Odd that there isn't any rolling for at least 6 months or so of training... I understand why but IDK

I have 2 more free classes to work through with Colton. I'm excited AF

They do have a beautiful facility, everyone was super friendly and it's about 30 min from my house.

Monday I have my 1st BJJ class to try out.
Thanks again for hooking me up bud

Thats bit weird, I’m of the opinion beginners should be just thrown in the deep end. It’s the best way to learn what bjj really is, also you’ll progress much faster rolling from early on

I have the same mind set, you need to get wet to learn to swim.
But I also understand as a beginner rolling most people don't understand, remember or care that they're in a learning environment. Beginners feel like they are in the UFC when rolling in class, making it a high potential for injury especially for a newbie.

Last night my grip failed me horribly!! We were working the bow and arrow choke.

I did bring the question up to one of the higher ranks, he showed me a bit more detail regarding turning the gi lapel so it sits into my hand much better improving my grip, he also had me hook behind the knee instead of grabbing the pants leg.

Things were better with the added detail regarding technique but
I'm curious if anyone might have any suggestions regarding improving grip strength?

My hands are beat up

I've been using one of these things for a year or so but last night was proof I need help with my grip strength

any ideas that don't involve more fapping???

grip-fighting with strength is awesome for arthritis in your pinky and ring fingers.
how do you feel about taping up your fingers every day before class? do you look forward to wincing when you hold toilet paper? :)

but to answer your question, farmer walks and push-ups

It’s bjj, you will get injured at some point. I just think you’re missing out a lot if you don’t roll for first 6 months

every BJJ *star* over the age of 45 will tell you "drill more, spar less"
there are levels to resistance in drilling, and trying a bunch of stuff that doesn't work seems like waste of time.

Sparing less isn’t the answer though. Sparring smart is. I know a few guys in the 50+ age range, one of whom is now 70. They all roll a ton, but do it with the guys they know aren’t going to hurt them, and go at a pace more suitable for them(think glacier movement).

I really think it comes down to finding good training partners, who aren’t trying to stroke their ego by tapping every single person in the gym.
