3. I do agree Afghanistan is a shithole and resource pit. But china will only use this to empower themselves through Afghanistan(mining, influence, etc etc etc)
Yeah but what's that got to do with pulling out and our interests? China has been trouncing around in Afghanistan for the entirety of us being there. It's only worth mentioning if that's a reason to stay which it doesn't sound like you think it overall, but here you are highlighting a reason to stay.
I dont know if the 2500 troops that were in Afghanistan would "bog us down" and I dont think our 35k(iirc) soldiers in South Korea for over 60 years bog us down other than financially.
Those are VERY different situations. South Korea is a forward deployed base in a peaceful ally that lets us project power rapidly in Asia.
We likely would have liked to do the same in Afghanistan but there's never been a welcoming ally running the country in reality as you have in S Korea.
Regardless, I wasn't talking about the 2500 troops and if that's your only gripe on what needed to stay (how long??) then its negligible compared the sunk cost we have already expended and for which would be required to ever have a different outcome than the Taliban taking over. And if the Taliban is inevitable without a sum of resources and time we all are agreeing not to expend, what's the point of 2500 troops for more than the last 16 months they've been there?
The troops aren't needed. Simply could have done everything you think we should have in the last 16 months.
Bring the troops home. Good.
Dont create a fucking humanitarian crisis because the administration is so fucking incompetent they couldnt do a few basic things like for example
A. Evacuate diplomatic personnel and american citizens before soldiers
B. Secure the damn airport
Agreed and I'd hang most of the burden on Biden since he's on watch now. But it wasn't in a vacuum and there was zero movement on any of this starting Feb 2020 Peace Accord with a line in the sand that we were leaving May 2021. And the peace Accord was negotiated often with the Afghan government in absentia so we are surprised they didn't like the terms and also peaced out at first light?
Biden extended that May 2021 date and of course it's his execution problem at this point since that extra time was supposed to be exactly for preventing this crisis.
