I randomly found a bottle of the ever elusive Blanton’s today. Really weird to see this and Eagle Rare this time of year. But no complaints, I take what I can get! I started stopping in at a couple small liquor stores lately, and so far it has paid off

It was just sitting on the shelf?

Lol, no not on the shelf. It was behind the counter and not on display at all. I had grabbed a couple of other decent bottles and they lady said “hey if you like good bourbon, I just got some of this…”

sold!

they only got 1 case, so I had the magic timing today.

Haha look at his knockoff imitation Willet wannabe
The wax seal looked like shit and felt more like plastic, the shitty paper labels were falling off, and the medallions were just stickers. And they even borrowed the pot still shaped bottle, and the glass was hazy and dirty looking. This cracked me up

Anybody tried this scotch?

"Special" edition Nick Offerman Lagavulin

I've had the regular Lagavulin (16 year I think?), and it was more peaty than I like. I've been dabbling more into scotch, but I just haven't acquired the taste for the earthy heavy peat ones.

Lukewarm Carl @Willthiswork I agree, it's sad! And this is part of the reason I have often not been a fan of Texas whiskey - it is often bottom shelf dogshit. Over the last decade or so, a bunch of new distilleries have opened up, so there are some exceptions to this. But when I talk bad about Texas whiskey, this is why.

The Garrison Bros is solid (unique, but solid), Swift Distillery is really good, and the recent Still Austin one has turned out well. A few of them did it right an didn't rush the product. A lot of people love Balcones, but I've never cared for it. They have a ton of offerings, but I've never been pleased with any of them that I have tried. I mean, it's made in Waco for fucks sake haha

Sounds like you have some whiskey sampling to do! Did you ever get into any of them?

No, but that's a fucking awesome bottle.
It is pretty sweet. They guy at the store says it’s usually in dark glass (deep amber I think), but they haven’t been able to get it this year. Thanks Obama!

Same design, but they’re using clear now because that’s what they can get. Great design though, I like the glass with texture like this.

Never even heard of it.
Cool ass bottle though.
Yep. I have to admit the packaging lured me in.

there’s a local Austin whiskey that I don’t like much at all. But it’s in a guitar-shaped bottle so they sell a shitload of it. Hopefully the smoke wagon doesn’t turn out to be a novelty bottle. But it’s allegedly pretty decent, so I’ll find out later!

I do too. I’ll crack it open later and see how it is ?

how you doing down under, buddy? Hope you have found a decent whiskey store by now!
Counting the days to move into our house. Just under 3 weeks.
Will definitely buy myself a decent bottle to celebrate. Right now I've just been focused on work and getting through to moving day.

Right on, brotha. What an adventure this must’ve been for your family!

kids back in school and all that? Congrats on the new house, 3 weeks isn’t too far away now. Of course I’m sure the new house will come with all kinds of projects for you haha. I finally hit a point in my life where I’ve had to accept that I don’t have as much time as I need to get some projects done within a reasonable timeframe (according to my wife lol). So I’ve started farming some things out. But I can barely find people available to do the work, or if you can their schedules are booked months out. Crazy times!

Yeah the oldest goes to preschool 4 days a week, half days. The youngest goes 3 days a week for a couple hours. Because of COVID the little guy hasn't had much social interaction with kids his age, so we're easing him in slowly.
They'll go full time when we finally get settled.

Once we move, I have over $10,000 allocated strictly for tools. Table saws, planers, drill press etc. So I'm fairly excited about that. The yard needs a bit of love, so I'll have a list of tasks.

It'll just be nice to reclaim our lives. We haven't slept in our own bed since June 14th, we miss our bed!

I tell ya what man, I respect the hell out of you for the planning and coordination that you must have had to do in order to accomplish this transition. Cheers buddy, glad you guys are settling in and getting acclimated.

We honestly caught lightning in a bottle with how everything worked out. House sale, shutting down and dissolving the business, selling the vehicles etc.
We managed to get the best exchange rate, moving our funds across. It was a small 2 week window, highest it's been in 3 something years.
Our stuff shipped without a hitch. It arrived 1 week late, but no biggie. It cost us just over $10,000 by packing, cleaning/disinfecting, documenting and itemizing everything, assigning a value for insurance, rather than getting an outfit to do it all which would've been double at minimum
There's a couple in Christchurch MIQ, right now, that my wife has been talking to since we started this journey. Don't know them personally, my wife met them on expatriate forum.
They came from Canada as well. They used a different shipping outfit and are having a nightmare. They flew over before their shipping date. Their container has been sitting in Vancouver for 3 weeks and they just got a shipping date of Sept 30. They're getting soaked $130 a day for storage. What a nightmare.
My wife been bringing them beer/wine and food to their quarantine location.
