It's necessary so states that are less populous still have a voice in how the country is ran. It's still heavily slanted toward areas with heavy population density, but the electoral college helps even it out a little bit.
NY and CA are two of the most fucked states in the country right now. They can't pick people to run their state efficiently, so we certainly can't have them deciding the fate of the entire nation.
