New thread since streaming services cycle through content and over time, recommendations may not exist.

What's everybody's opinion on Don't look up? I plan to watch it this evening but seeing a lot of mixed reviews.

Wife and I liked it. It’s not really lol funny while watching but I find I enjoyed it more after the fact. Very obvious parallels as to what’s going on right now.

I just finished WW2 Road to Victory. Ten part series in full colour again. Would recommend.

Worth watching, but not great. It's one of the new genre of not funny comedy movies. The characters are good, and the acting is good people just don't make really funny movies anymore.

That’s such an odd description, not funny comedy movie. What other movies would you say are like that?

The Big Short would be a good example of what I'm talking about which is made by the same person as Don't Look Up. It's got some funny moments, but you're not laughing out loud like when you watch Step Brothers, which again is another Adam McKay film.

Didn’t watch The Big Short, and while I am not against that brand of funny that doesn’t make you belly laugh, I much prefer the comedy that makes me laugh until I can’t breathe.
Probably will still watch Don’t Look Up, just won’t race to it as fast as I normally would.

started it. It's just too unrealistic for me...not the premise or the "world", just how the characters behave and interact.
It definitely didn’t get the international traction they were expecting after Squid Game’s popularity.
Was it “overacted”?

Like I said, worth watching, but it's not great.

What's the last movie you laughed that hard at?

the characters are flat and 1-dimensional. The narrative is overtly contrived around "reveal" in every episode which is supposed to move the plot forward, but it's just a misdirection to string out the obvious presence of a plot-twist.

I'm sure M. Night Shamalan movies do big business in SK.

I don't think this is too much of a spoiler, but I'll hide it anyway

this team of military astronauts take a couple scientists to a moon base, which went completely dark, to find a capsule. They're told that everyone died from a radiation event. There's maybe 10 characters total...and two of them are named 'E1' and 'E2' :eyeroll:. They find a body on the moon base that doesn't show any signs of radiation poisoning, and all of their meters show no radiation. So they make their way to the command center, turn on power, and then one of the military guys says "Fuck it, I'm sick of this helmet." and takes off his helmet. Then they all take off their helmets. AND THEN they decide to try and turn on the base's air filtration system. The plot advances off of this premise that a bunch of bad things happen, none of which would have happened if they left their helmets on.

Everybody in the military knows that you don't take off your MOPP gear until the lowest ranking guy has taken his off and been living healthy for several hours. No rational person in that situation would even consider taking their helmet off....there are worse examples, but that's the easiest to point out without ruining the show

The last MOVIE I laughed that hard at… Probably the newest My Hero Academia movie in October (it wasn’t necessarily funny, but as a dorky fan, when a character says/does something, it makes my son and me laugh, and his laughter makes me laugh harder, so). Before that, Thor Ragnarok almost a year ago. I mostly watch TV shows and I would say almost all the ones I’ve watched in the past three months have made me laugh like that.

and Thor is a 5 year old movie. There just aren't a lot of comedies anymore.

what do you think about expanding this to include the other major streaming services like Hulu and Prime Video?

I didn't specifically mention it since everybody was already posting other services in the other thread, but I updatedthe title now.

Gracias

My wife and I loved it. It was very clever and subtle with the dark humor. It is satire, but also was a good reminder that our society is so FUBAR that you just gotta laugh.
