Is he good?
All I know about him is that he strengthened your running game.
The phrase I keep hearing him referenced as is “savant” and that his football knowledge is off the charts. However, he’s not one of those who is “the smartest guy in the room and makes sure you know it” type (that shit was a big issue with Flores). He is very relatable to his players, which is why anyone who ever played under him at his various roles in San Francisco, Atlanta, Houston and Cleveland all would tell you, they’d run through walls for him. He works to each player’s strengths and simplifies it to them. He’s also a big “self accountability” guy. If there’s shortcomings, he won’t point fingers 50 directions. He’ll own them.
More than one in the coaching community have stated they think he could become the prize of Mike Shanahan’s coaching tree. When you realize how damn good that tree has become, it should give you an idea how much a ceiling McDaniel has.
This isn’t Gase, Philbin or the other asinine comparisons the fan base are making. He’s had lengthy experience in the NFL building up less than players to look far better than they are. He didn’t puff his chest after jock riding Peyton Manning in 2014. Not saying he’s a slam dunk. No first time head coach is. He could completely shit the bed too, but I have a hell of a lot of confidence about this one. With talks that he’s talking to Fangio and Munchak about joining his coaching staff, if he finalizes that deal, I’m even more stoked. I wasn’t for any of the last candidates. Even “Brian Almighty.”
