i cant stand that term: "woke"

i know why some people are saying that. there is a black woman as a viking leader

but its a show about vikings. its not "woke" whatever that means

edit: i didnt have cable. so i couldnt watch vikings. now that i saw it on Amazon Prime, ill watch it at some point
Call it what you want
I just meant to say there really isn't a great reason to cast a black woman as the viking leader
I don't think that is historical at all

IMO you would have killed it making Vikings(original) review videos...maybe you can find a way to do something with it even after the series is over?

i am not familiar with 11th century. but presumably, there were instances of white men falling in love with and marrying black women.

plus, when i see the actress, i just see human woman. peoples skin color doesnt even cross my mind. so i wouldnt have even wondered whether it was historically accurate until* i saw people whining in the comment section of the trailer lol

I haven't seen the show myself, not sure if it is based on history in any way
I love period and historical accuracy, but I can also enjoy a show without it

I'm 100% sure dudes fell in love with black women during all time periods, impossible not to

Original Vikings also had some issues, but I really enjoyed the first few episodes

As you probably know, sometimes the early season 1 episodes can often hook you for a whole series regardless of where it ends up

ive neve axtually thought about this in detail before because the woke casting type debates online bore me

especially when its people complaining about black elves like "theres no such thing as black elves!" lol

but even in terms of fiction that is loosely based off of historical times periods, places, and people, i never find issues with casting and i just realized why

if i was born in an all-white village hundreds of years ago and had never seen a black person, i would probably look at them and they would seem different

but im from new york city. so i dont see color. i see men and women and pigeons.

when a black woman walks into buffalo wild wings, i dont see her as a black woman. i just see a woman walkinng into buffalo wild wings

so when this black chick comes on screen with her sword, i dont think "waiit, thats a black woman playing a white woman role." i just think "thats a woman viking playing a woman viking role"

not sure if that makes sense. but that just clicked. i guess thats why casting never effects me the way it does some

makes a lot of sense, I'm grew up in mostly whiteville usa and I don't care what color people are either...so it isn't a regional rule(I did grow up friends with a bunch of black dudes from football though)

I just want my tv/movie genghis khan to not be a white guy, and my billy the kid not to be a black dude
for historical purposes only...makes it more believable as a character

casting is tricky business if you are historically picky

I haven't even seen that series yet tho so...

side note about this role. she appears in a location that is tolerant to both pagans and christians. so in theory, even if a black viking is strange historically, this type of town would be the one where one might be found

alot of the casting is great tho. queen of england is gorgeous. and the "littlefinger" type guy of the show does really well

That's great and all, but to me - when you cast a black woman as an 11th Century Nordic warlord, and you make her as physically dominant as any male character - well, now you're showing that you have no respect at all for the history you're portraying. And no respect for the culture that you're illustrating, either.

But for the sake of argument - if Netflix is making a WW2 drama, what do you think the chances are that they decide that Hitler's table of advisors is too white and male onscreen, and so now Hitler gets a black woman giving him advice on how to start up the Holocaust? Never ever, EVER happen - and the reason is because these casting choices have nothing to do with inclusion and representation, and everything to do with political agenda.

she is not playing one of the men at Hitler's table. she is playing a fictional character

and she is not as physically dominant as any male character

Does she exist in that time and place? If there is no historical equivalent for her, then she shouldn't be there. Otherwise, it's not a history series you're making, it's a fantasy series.

And I will be happy to be wrong, but I can't believe that she won't be beating at least one make character in a head to head fight. Maybe I'm wrong.

im done opining on this topic. there's a black woman in Vikings - Valhalla, and it didn't ruin the experience for me at all. the actress was good

but if it ruins the story for y'all, then here's my response

i dont know what woke means

i know that its usually used by someone who is whining tho

are you whining like my friend Rambo John J @Baby Yod was?
I have no problem watching people on screen who don't look like me. No problem at all. I would love to see a proper epic about the life of Genghis Khan, told in his own language and with a full cast of Central Asian actors.

When you had John Wayne playing Genghis Khan, that was wrong. It is now rightly looked at as cringe. Having bullshit "representation" crammed in there for the sake of it, is also bullshit and cringe. If it was a drama series about the life and court of Mansa Musa, would his love interest be played by a redheaded Welsh actress and everybody just pretends like this random ginger isn't immersion breaking at all? Take a guess. To me, that is racist. ?

again, this is a fictional character. and historically, there were black vikings. so this isnt some woke bullshit

moreover, its just a show about swords and shit. its not that big a deal. you dont have to watch it

Why not just cast someone who isn't out of place?

I don't want to see white faces in historical dramas that take place in fuedal Japan.

And a huge part of the appeal of historical fiction, is watching a strange culture and its practices. The makers of Vikings boast about not putting horns on their character's helmets because real Vikings didn't do that? Real Vikings didn't have women leading war parties either.

Show me that somewhere in this time and place in history there actually was a black female Viking leader to justify the existence of this character, and I will never complain about it.

Oops....... they can't.

Therefore, woke bullshit.

Why does she need to be there? Rome had multiple fantastic female characters with power and schemes of their own, and not a single one of them ever set foot in the Forum or even addressed a group of men. The series wouldn't have been better if Atia had become consul to strike a blow for female empowerment, would it.

And I won't watch the new Vikings - I'm too busy watching the Gilded Age. ?
