BeardOfKnowledge @BeardOfKnowledge any thoughts/comments on silver labs?

I've still been looking around for lab pups, and there is a litter nearby that's about two weeks old. I don't know much about the silvers and not sure I've seen one around before, but I think they're pretty much standard and typical labs?

The pups do look great!

My cousin has a silver lab. Great dog. Super friendly. Energetic. Dumb enough to be cute but not so dumb it's annoying.

Labs are my personal preference for our family dog wants, and they’re what I know as far as temperament and personality. But I’ve never been around the silvers. Sounds like they are very typical, just a branch of of chocolates.

I inquired to see if any were left in this litter but haven’t heard back.

I almost got a silver lab a few years back, as far as I can tell, no one seems to know if they're a real thing, or a designer breed that people keep inbreeding. The people who breed them say they're a natural coloration. People who breed traditional lab colors say they're man-made. I'm no expert, but I'd lean towards them being a man-made. It appears that they basically exist because people keep inbreeding the rare silver coloration. Ie, "Silver" is actually just a faulty chocolate. But some people decided they liked the look, I don't blame them, and decided to keep the party going. Silver labs had pretty strong representation around here about 10 years ago, but seem to have settled andbeen replaced by "Fox red" labs. For what it's worth, the AKC doesn't recognize anything other than chocolate, black, or yellow. I assume, that like me, you don't give a flying fuck about AKC classifications, but it's worth noting that if they look at silver labs and go "What the fuck is that?" it probably isn't something with a well established history.

The ones I have met have been sweet dogs with typical lab temperaments, BUT you kind of never know what you're getting when you're getting a dog that specifically has to be bred for. I'd assume they run the gamut of typical Lab health issues but probably pile on some extras as designer dogs tend to have.

That being said, I'd get all of those puppies and live like a king. And oof, the exhaustion on that mama's face is palpable.

Got a response to my inquiry about the pups, supposed to hear from them sometime soon to get more info.

I did some internet research, and it was a lot of the same info mentioned in your post. It’s just a diluted gene in chocolate labs, but there really are two camps on these dogs. And like you said, I don’t give a shit about AKC classification, but from what I read it sounds like they can be recognized as full labs but not one of the 3 accepted colors (of that makes sense). Sounds like silvers don’t qualify to be in shows and shit like that, but whatever that’s not why I want one.

Who knows of this will work out, but they’re only about 45 min away, so I’m going to see if I can come meet the available ladies (I want a female)

Like one of these? I thought this was just some gimmick thing.

Literally read this post just now, switched to the camera app and took this photo without moving:

Weird coincidence.

They are good bowls. This one doesn't really need it because she's not a fanatical eater. But for a lab, yeah those bowls will slow them right down, for sure.

I think they can show, but have to register as Chocolates. Again, neither of us care, lol. As I said, for me my concern would be that it wasn't well bred, but if you can confirm they weren't dipping in the shallow end of the gene pool to get their silvers, it should be a good pup.

If you get a female dog you should name her Brianna Barksdale.

Now she's finished her food, has climbed up on the couch and is sulking because I won't let her lay down and fall asleep on me, because I'm getting up in a minute. And getting progressively less subtle with communicating her dissatisfaction, as well.

Is that your living room?
No, that's the sunroom/dog's room/smoking room/fern room. It's neither inside nor fully outside. But more outside than inside. If Sadie finds a good stick on her morning walk, we let her carry it home and chew it up in her room. ?

I think we’re going to go up next weekend to see them, 5 females and 6 males (they lost one too). They’re just over two weeks old now. Should be ready for release approximately end of July or so. But she said if we want to come claim one we can come by anytime.

and forgive my ignorance, but I don’t get the Brianna Barksdale reference. I don’t watch much TV or movies, so I assume I’m missing something here lol

SongExotic2 @SongExotic2 say The Wire is the greatest show in the history of television. There's a few cast members who are members of the Barksdale family. It's a proper sounding last name when applied to a dog.

I just read a whole thread of someone asking for Jewish names for their new cat.
I got some good ones.

Yenta is my top. Especially if they’re loud.
Falafel, Nosh, Dybbuk, Shmear, Challah… like, I can keep going! Someone had a dog named Queen Ester! Someone even said they want to name a cat Gitel! THAT’S ME! That’s my Hebrew name !! WILD

Ahh, gotcha.

I’ve never seen a single minute of The Wire ?

but that holds true for many other shows talked about here on the forum.
I have a hard time sitting still on the couch long enough to watch anything. Used to watch shit way more, but I’m way out of touch these days lol

It's worth watching, but you're honestly not missing much.

Suck it Q @Qat !
I’m sure it is, and I’m sure I’d like it.
But it’s weird, seeing most games and movies or TV shows up on a screen just doesn’t do much for me these days. Unless it’s some non-fiction or documentary, or military history type thing. In those cases I’m all in!

my wife, who is super artistic/creative, says it’s due to my lack of willingness to access my imagination ?

can’t disagree!
