Oh yeah, he's popular right now due to how bad the situation was before he came to power. For the everyday folks, they can walk the streets again, and their children can play outside, without fear of being shot.
No-one knows how this will play out long term. There have been other dictators in history who were popular at first, but I'm not aware of any dictator who was in power for any significant length of time who didn't end up being an oppressive tyrant.
Also, the measures taken to curb the extreme violence in El Salvador aren't really applicable to developed western countries like the USA for example. The homicide rates were astronomically high, beyond anything seen in the USA. "Just lock up all the gang members" involved removing any right to a fair trial, there are rumours of men being imprisoned because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time (happened to be in the same building as many actual gang members), had too many tattoos, etc.
EDIT: As I said in my last post though, you can't say that Bukele hasn't got results.
