I've always had a pet theory that all the acid heads of the 60s went to work for toy and cartoon companies in the 1980-1990s. If you were a kid in the 80s, you lived during a golden age. There was such an odd creativity to them that I never saw come back after circa 2000.

I still remember the Dissect-an-Alien kit, which was a slimy 3D puzzle type toy, getting all the weird organs to fit correctly inside the alien:
