50 years ago: the Arecibo Message was beamed into Space.

On 16th November, 1974, the Arecibo Message was sent into space to communicate human existence to potential extraterrestrial life.

Created by astronomer Frank Drake and his team, the message consisted of:
  • Numbers 1 to 10
  • Atomic numbers of DNA elements
  • The DNA double helix structure
  • A human figure
  • A diagram of the solar system.
  • A diagram of the Arecibo Telescope
It was sent from Puerto Rico’s Arecibo Observatory & it’s destination was the star cluster M13, approximately 25,000 light-years away.

So just 24,950 years more until it reaches its intended destination!

Scientists just confirmed there’s a nearby neutron star rotating at a whopping 43,000 RPM, and it has thermonuclear explosions on its surface. It’s part of a binary star system (4U 1820-30) 26000 light-years away. Its white dwarf companion orbits at a record-breaking 11 minutes.

Magnetic North is now drifting faster than 30 miles per year. It had moved away from the geological north and now set to move past it in the opposite direction

There remains the geographic poles. Those don't change. This is the magnetic poles which meander because the interior of the Earth is effectively a molten ball of metal that sloshes around due to convection, differential rotation and other sophisticated reasons that exist despite our inability to directly see/smell/taste/touch/hear.

Mad honey, harvested from the cliffs of Ghale Gaun, Nepal, is collected by gatherers who scale 800 feet with minimal equipment. In small amounts, it can produce relaxation and euphoria, but larger doses may cause severe symptoms, including dizziness, nausea, hallucinations and heart issues or death

Russian physicist Anatoli Bugorski is the only person known to have been directly exposed to a nuclear particle accelerator beam — and survive.

Aftermath: The left half of Bugorski's face swelled up beyond recognition and, over the next several days, the skin started to peel, revealing the path that the proton beam had burned through parts of his face, his bone, and the brain tissue underneath. As it was believed that he had received far in excess of a fatal dose of radiation, Bugorski was taken to a clinic in Moscow where the doctors could observe his expected demise.

However, Bugorski survived, completed his PhD, and continued working as a particle physicist. There was virtually no damage to his intellectual capacity, but the fatigue of mental work increased markedly. Bugorski completely lost hearing in the left ear, replaced by a form of tinnitus. The left half of his face was paralysed due to the destruction of nerves"
