Project Iceworm was a secret U.S. military plan during the 1960s to hide nuclear missiles under the ice in Greenland. The goal was to create a huge network of tunnels, stretching 2,500 miles. The project failed because the ice was too unstable.

In December 1960, a pram containing Dahl's baby son Theo was hit by a taxi in NYC leading to hydrocephalus - 'water on the brain'. Undeterred, Dahl enlisted toymaker-engineer Stanley Wade and paediatric neurosurgeon Kenneth Till to develop Dahl-Wade-Till Valve, saving thousands of children worldwide

The first eyes appeared about 541 million years ago in a group of now extinct animals called trilobites. This happened at the very beginning of the Cambrian period when complex multicellular life really took off. Trilobites' eyes were compound, similar to those of modern insects.

A v-shaped bed invented in 1932, supporting the body perfectly at every point thus promoting better sleep.

This bed was introduced to aid patient recovery but rendered impractical in hospitals because it restricts circulation and the rigid incline caused painful pressure points.

Two inmates in separate cells managed to conceive a child without ever meeting. They passed semen through the air vents using a makeshift line made of bedding, and the woman used a yeast infection applicator to inseminate herself. Against all odds, it worked, and the baby was born healthy

Yikes.

A bed that won't let you roll over in your sleep is a recipe for either painful hip joints in the morning, or cutting off circulation to an arm.

No way the inventor actually tried sleeping on that, or he'd have realised what a terrible idea it was.
