Gleison Tibau won’t return to the Octagon anytime soon.

The longtime UFC veteran tested positive for EPO following his first-round submission victory over Abel Trujillo in November. He told MMA Fighting on Tuesday that he was issued a two-year suspension from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA). According to Tibau, he has decided not to appeal anymore. MMA Junkie first reported the news.

"It’s going to be it," Tibau told MMA Fighting. "They asked me if I wanted to appeal, but it was too tiresome. Three months of meetings at the court, that’s tiring. I don’t want to appeal anymore. I’m done. I expected it to be easier, but that demands a lot from you mentally, physically and financially. If I wanted to continue the appeal, I would have to pay all the court costs from now on, I would have to pay my lawyer, and the suspension would probably go down only three or six months, I don’t know, so I decided not to appeal."

Holding a 17-9 record under the UFC banner, Tibau admits he used the drug Erythropoietin (EPO) out of competition for the first time in his career, but thought it wouldn’t be a problem. Tibau also failed an in-competition test at UFC Fight Night 77.

"I’m upset," he said. "I have to apologize to my fans because it was a medical mistake. We used a substance we thought wouldn’t be anything, we used it out of competition. I have my conscience clear that I took it without imagining I was doing something wrong. It’s going to be hard for me, but I will pay the price for my mistake."

well.. I was expecting him to just say he flat out cheated after seeing the thread title, but nope.. It's rare that you get the whole truth out of a cheater. At least he's admitted knowingly putting it into his body. I give him credit there.

I guess the question is, is it better to deny that you purposely cheated? Or just be honest and say what really happened? Would there be more back lash from the fans? Would you get a lighter sentence for admitting that you were guilty?

Hard to look at guys like Tibau and Romero, and think they're clean.

Yeah exactly.

He admitted it but made an excuse at the same time.

"I want to use this time outside the Octagon to evolve and train, add more things to my game," Tibau said. "I want to evolve in those areas I need, and be back more versatile to bring joy to my fans and the UFC fans. During my entire career, I had big wins, losses, silly losses, tough losses, but I always had my head high, looking to grow and be better, and I won’t waste this time. Some people might think I will never be back, might think I’ll quit, but I’ll prove them wrong. I will be back stronger."

I hope he does this.

Oooh, so close Tibau.

As i was learning from ErikMagraken @ErikMagraken in another thread, what he explained to me is that legally the best thing is deny it. Not honest, but fuck if you're going for honesty you wouldn't cheat in the first place. :alien:

If you're on of these guys that gets busted, why wouldn't you deny it? At least until it goes thru the process anyway.

Agreed, clearly you have the scruples that will allow you to cheat. Why would lying weigh on your conscience any heavier? Not trying to sound harsh, i'm legit asking because i don't get it.

I have a problem with this. Excuse. You did something to try to break the rules but didn't think it was breaking the rules? Just accept it.

He didnt completely tell on himself, i see no problem with what he did. Its like if you get a DWI, are you going to tell the prosecutor it was the first time you ever drank and drove or tell him that you do it 3 times a week? If you tell on ylurself you are a fucking idiot. If you are gonna go out like Chael and move on then it doesnt matter.

In a way correct, but if you break someone's skull open because you had extra energy in an mma fight or are drunk and run over a family because you are drunk doesn't really make it acceptable.......

Its not about acceptability, its about getting your ass out of trouble. I dont condone either but i also dont condone telling on yourself and making it worse.

There is no way you will ever appease MMA fans when it comes to ped use so why worry about trying.

You are correct, if you look at it from the viewpoint of not hanging yourself out to dry. Example: I get pulled over for a speeding violation.

Officer: Do you know why i pulled you over today sir?
Me: No sir, officer.

I'm not going to gather the fucking evidence for him. That's his job.

Im not on the fence but i dont pretend I have some higher moral authority than someone else. All your arguements are hypothetical in regards to Tibau. He obviously wants to fight again so he isnt going to admit to more than he was actually caught for. I see nothing wrong with that. The only place someone can be convicted because you think they did something is in the court of public opinion.

It's been said, these guys will do and say whatever to make them a victim of circumstances. They say just enough to cast doubt over thier postive results. Understandable, they have to protect their job, career, and brand. But if you're not going to be honest, you may as well go full Anderson Silva. I think he is trying to come clean, basically because he feels he has no other options. Appeal didn't work, confess and move on.

With the weight he's been cutting, and his physical appearance, it was just a matter of time. Guys have been slimming down, getting KO"d, or caught doing PEDS a lot. There is a clear difference, the new era is here.

Didn't Anderson just do an interview where he said "I never used PED's"? lol
