Rogan on CM Punk: 'It's ridiculous for him to fight in the UFC'

It's been 15 months and CM Punk still doesn't have a fight scheduled, though he was briefly tied to one with Mickey Gall before he suffered an injury.

One person that is still not a fan of the whole idea is UFC announcer Joe Rogan. On his recent podcast, he discussed the issue of Punk with Bas Rutten, and he thinks Punk should have made his debut outside of the UFC:

"I don't know what's going to happen with that guy. I don't understand this whole thing. Well, I also think it's ridiculous for him to fight in the UFC. I think he should fight in a small organization. Take a fight in a small organization, build yourself up. I have always said that's what should have happened with Brock Lesnar."

I listens to this and I think he's right. Bas also has his own podcast and said the same about sage, said he should work have continued working his way through the smaller shows for another 3 - 5 years.

I think 3-5 years is a long time. I have thoroughly enjoyed watching Max Galloway progress his career in the UFC. But Hax' skill at 19 was leaps beyond Sage.

I would agree with Joe, if Punk was legitimately trying to start a long-term career. Since he's stated that his fight might very well be a one-off, which I feel it will be especially with all of his injuries, I think he's doing the right thing. He's using the name and fame that he spent years busting up his body to get, to make the most $$ off of his bucket list fight.

If there's any evidence cm Punk is gonna show up this competitive, I'm all for him getting a go at it.

As is, he should go through the TUF process as a compromise and ratings booster.

The hard part is this is what the UFC wants. They wan constant conversation about their organization whether it is positive or not. Fight fans want to see fights, we don't care the organization or what the name is as long as it is entertaining. Like Ariel Helwani said, CM Punk was signed at the end of the worst financial year for the UFC and who knows what would have happened if it would have been the end of 2015 because that was the UFC's highest gaining year to date (I believe).

Whole thing could have just been for eyeballs of the none MMA fan.

But it's not. It's about promotion and it's about who the fucking goof has a personal vendetta with.

Yeah, Sakuraba was on the same card but I forget the event. I agree though, he should have done what every pro wrestler transitioning to mma has done and fought smaller shows.

Maybe not having the wresting pedigree is a big part of why he hasn't but do some grappling competitions or something. Maybe if he did that he'd stop getting all the hate.

Would have been wasted in my opinion.

Starting earlier for that, maybe. But same age, etc?

What would he gain? He was a top 10 fighter beating top 10 fighters. Smaller orgs would be just him steam rolling everybody and wasting the limited years he had left.

I admit I had my doubts as well, but the guy proved he deserved to be in the mix.

The haters were still hating after Brock beat Herring, Mir, and Randy. And lets all be honest about that first Mir fight. Brock was beating that ass with ease before a stand up for a single not illegal back of the head shot (per the explanation of the rules by BJM). Everyone still hated on him. Even now, 2 weeks ago Barnett is still going on about how Brock was given the easy road.

If Brock had been "given" some easy fights, I'd agree. But Brock fought nothing but top 10 comp after his first fight in a smaller org (and beat plenty). What more can the guy do to prove he deserves to be there? But that didn't stop the naysayers because he didn't "earn" it.

People will always hold the 1-0 entrance against them if they want to.
Too bad the guy wasn't smart enough to east some fiber.

I think the stomach aids thing hurt him way more than age. I don't know if he would have beaten Cain if not for the illness, but I don't think he would have lost to Ubereem.
