A welterweight showdown with explosive potential is currently under discussion.

MMAFighting.com's Ariel Helwani reported on Wednesday edition of UFC Tonight that talks are under way for a matchup between Rory MacDonald and Stephen "Wonderboy" Thompson.

The 33-year-old Thompson (12-1) is coming off the most impressive performance of his career, a one-sided, first-round TKO finish of former UFC welterweight championJohny Hendricks in Las Vegas on Feb. 6.

The South Carolina native has won six in a row, with four of his last five coming by KO or TKO.

MacDonald (18-3), for his part, would make his first Octagon appearance since he was half of one of the greatest fights in mixed martial arts history. MacDonald's fifth-round TKO loss to current welterweight champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189 was the runaway pick for 2015 Fight of the Year.

The fighter out of Montreal's Tristar gym has won eight of his past 10 fights, with both losses coming to Lawler.

No date has been set for the potential clash of 170-pound contenders.\

Hell yeah, that should be a great fight! I'm stoked. :D
Yessir, they've trained together in the past so they should have a feel for each other too before this...such a good fight!

Only reason I'm not 100% super hyped is cos I don't wanna see Rory have 2 back to back loses (and he very well might) or Wonderbro being derailed from his titleshot....its a great fight, but kind of a lose-lose if you like both. Its kinda how I felt at the Romero- Jacare fight..

I think that while yes, it'll definitely derail one of them for a bit, they're both young and super talented. They'll both climb that hill again no matter who wins.

I'm assuming this means they are hoping for a Conor win so he fights for the 170lb strap?

Fan of both guys.

This is the kind of fight where I don't want to see either guy lose.

Although I want to see Wonderboy get a title shot.

It's a tough fight for Stephen, I'm not sure who to pick but would be rooting for Stephen to win and therefore, Rory to lose.

Honestly, this is the fight Rory needs, win or lose, to develop into the champion he is to become. He's got everything but has become a bit too reliant on toughness for being such a young fighter. A fight with Thompson will teach him to redirect his approach to fighting. True story.

I was watching a fight recently, I want to say in the last couple days, Rory vs. Nate Diaz. I watched it to get a better idea of Nate's style before his fight this weekend. If any of you remember that fight, that's the one where Rory tossed Nate around the ring like he was a stuffed teddy bear and dominated him.

What fascinated me the most though was the commentary by Rogan and Goldberg. They were beaming with excitement over Rory's potential as future champion. And then I looked at the date of the fight: 2011.

It's interesting that five years after all the hype of being the heir apparent to GSP, Rory still has not won the belt yet. It's make or break time.
