Rory MacDoanld and Stephen Thompson will headline UFC Fight Night: Ottawa on June 18th. The UFC announced the fight at today's Unstoppable press conference
It will be MacDonald's first fight since his loss to current UFC Welterweight Champion Robbie Lawler at UFC 189. Thompson is coming off of a major upset win over former champion Johny Hendricks at UFC Fight Night: Vegas last month.
Bloody Elbow's Michael Hutchinson spoke to Stephen Thompson about the fight annoucement.
"He's the #1 ranked guy, I'm the #2 guy. If I have to step out there with Rory just to prove to the fans and the UFC that I'm ready for that title shot then I don't mind. He's an honorable fighter and a good guy. There's not a better guy to step into the Octagon than him," Thompson said.
Thompson has trained with MacDonald and with his team at Tri-Star in Montreal and knows what MacDonald will plan to do in the fight.
"I think he's a tough guy to fight. I know he will come out with a good gameplan because the guys at Tri-Star are very good strategists. I know eventually he'll want to get me to the ground. I'm constantly working on my takedown defense and ground game. I know I can go out there and beat Rory MacDonald."
