Where you at MBers?

Let's discuss gear, trails, and brag to each other about how awesome our bikes are.

I started seriously mountain biking in 1993, and the sport has consumed me from day 1. It's been one hell of a fun sport to evolve with, both with my personal progression as a rider and also the advancement in technology.

Let's get started. Here is my current rig, a murdered out Turner Sultan.

Yeah man, Gee is awesome. Those downhill coursers can get crazy fast - but they are a whole lot of fun (as long as you don't eat shit hah). Speed is control...speed is control...
I've kayaked over waterfalls (little ones) and the mantra is "I'm strapped in now, it's up to me" but I wouldn't even jog down parts of that trail.

The "pucker factor" is high on those courses. The pros have some HUGE cojones, and very little concern of self preservation. And it's a huge part of why I love the sport so much - because there are always limits to be pushed, and there will always be people to push them. The various disciplines of mountain biking all evolve and progress constantly.

Why does it have a slanted top crossbar? I think you bought a chick bike, bro!

The top tube is slanted so I don't become a chick by smashing my nuts off during a crash or while having to get a foot down quick. 29er wheels make the bikes ride high, so you have to get that stand over clearance somewhere.

I ride a Rocky Mountain Element from 2008, it's the Tribal Bear frame.
I just tested some down hilly stuff last week and again this evening and the speed is certainly taking some getting used to.

I've always been a big fan of Rock Mountain bikes, and I remember the Tribal frames...badass!!

There is an old saying about this: Speed never killed anyone...it's the suddenly becoming stationary that does it. :D
well what you wrote about speed=control seems like it may be true. I bailed major when I tried going slow (pussied out and didn't want to bomb down a rut).

I'll post a picture of the bike when I take one :)

I always though slanted crossbars were so people couldn't see up your dress when getting on.

I switched to a Roadbike last year. I'm a little too banged up to be in any scenario where my nuts are getting smashed off of crossbars. Finally bought a helmet this year too.

Yeah, it seems counter intuitive in some cases, but speed can definitely help you get through the really rough stuff. With momentum, the suspension will do its work and sort of glide over obstacles rather than taking each one individually (which will stack your suspension down and feel rougher). Of course, there are always good decisions and bad decisions :). Just have to find that sweet spot between speed and control. The modern suspension on mountain bikes is ridiculously awesome, I'm amazed at some of the stuff I can hit these days.

And that is why my top tube is slanted. I bet you'd have a better chance of busting nuts on that^^^ than I would on the my bike. It's like that for a good reason!

And yeah, a brain bucket is a good idea. Especially on the road - pavement is unforgiving. It's jagged limestone everywhere on my trails, a good helmet is a must. One bad/wrong fall and you're a vegetable.

Good thread idea :)

I do almost every two wheel thing out there or have so at one time. As a teen I was sponsored for BMX and travelled around the Pacific Northwest for lots of races but haven't done any competition since 18, im 36 now.

For my MTN bike I have a 2011 Banshee Scythe which I love. I mostly ride DH at Silverstar mountain in Vernon BC when I do get out.

Not my footage but you get an idea of what the are like.

I need new hardware for my rear pivot linkage because somehow the alan bolt snapped and it's a bit of a bitch to locate lately.

Ill still have my Robinson Team XL BMX from my glory days in damn near mint shape. For the road days I have my Norco Threashhold.

When I want to go really fast I take my Honda.

If anybody does any of there in or around southern BC please pet me know as I'm always looking for new people to ride with. Street bike days (croth rockets) are over with for now, not worth risking the crazy fines and impounding anymore for the way they are meant to be rode.

Oh and for anybody who read some of my RV thread you might remember my wife's Kona getting stolen on our first leg out in Naniamo. The RCMP did find it and since has shipped it back to us! :)
Fuck you thieves !

Awesome thread idea. After I get back from my vacation I'm gonna buy a bike. I'm not sure what to get so any suggestions would be appreciated. I don't want to spend much more than $1000 and I'm willing to buy used as long as the bike isn't trashed.

Right on man. Very cool that you raced BMX. I've done a good number of mountain bike races (mostly endurance type deals, 12-hour or 24-hour races), and I still do a few now and again. But the racing aspect of biking for me slowed down when we had a kid.

I dig the Banshee, I've always dreamed of having a Boxxer fork - those things are sick!

Never been to Silver Star, but that place looks pretty damn fun. I'm adding that to my bucket list.

The Norco looks pretty sweet as well. I have a Surly Karate Monkey that I use for road/commuting. I mostly use it for family rides and pulling a trailer with the toddler in it (see my other thread about after work rituals).

Last but certainly not least, I'm jealous of your Honda. I haven't had a dirt bike since I was a kid, but damn they are fun.

Cheers bro

I don't do any of the shit posted on this thread. But I do have a bike. It's a Giant Roam.

Looks a bit like this:

It's a hybrid bike. It can handle some trail stuff - but nothing like what's been posted. There are some trails for bikes I take it on - but they aren't super rocky - mostly just dirt trails. Pretty safe if you don't clip a tree. So I don't think that really counts as "mountain biking". I generally just use it to cruise around - and there is a paved bike trail around town where I like to see how fast I can get going. I got it up to 42 mph - which sounds weak as shit, but it felt like I was doing 100 mph. Haha.

Holy shit at the price of the high end ass kicker bikes. I want to just ride around on the trails around where I live, I don't want to ride up a mountain and jump off the fucking thing. Is $1000 too cheap for what I'm looking for? Is $2000 more like it? I don't want to spend too much at first if I don't like it as much as I think I will.

Yeah, bikes are quite expensive these days. For a new bike, $1000 won't get you much. If you can swing it, I'd encourage closer to the $2000 mark to get you started. For used, you can find a really solid bike for $2000 or less. Let us know when you're ready to start looking, there are lots of options out there.

I say whatever bike gets you out, is the right bike for you. And 42 mph is pretty fucking fast on a bike! Bravo!

Yeah I just read that. I'd prefer new so I'll see what I can find.

I have a friend that rides a lot so I'll see of he wants to go with me when I go to the local bike shop. I can spend around $2000 because the way I look at it is once you have the bike and gear then everything else is free (as long as you don't eat shit too often). Hours upon hours of endless fun and it is a great workout.

Exactly. I've spent who knows how much money on bikes, gear, trips, etc over the last 20+ years. It's been worth every penny, unquestionably.
