Igor Vovchanchyn fights Ukrainian mob boss in prison in Russia

The story was told by a forum member on Sherdog in 2005, the members name was Alex. As a lot of people know Alex was the first to showcase a lot of Igors first fights. Most of these fights were very rare and most people didn't even know they existed before Alex came around. Alex claimed to be Igors friend and definitely had a lot of info about him

So here is where the story/rumour started. Taken from the Sherdog forum
The quotes below were taken from posts that happen over the course of a few weeks

Alex: Hello to all! I`m new member here. I`m from Ukraine and i want to tell about Igor fighting history fight by fight. Today you can watch Igor`s first MMA fight.

Alex: Igor is not just my favorite fighter. He is my friend. I know everything about his MMA fights.

Alex: I talked with Igor today. he said he got offer to fight with some japanese guy (93 kg).

Alex: Btw my dream is watching all Igor fights. 7 fights remain to find: Ukrainian Octagon 3, Cup of Stars and Igor fight in Kharkow`s prison. I hope to get it in a future.

Quote: Originally Posted by Keiron: wow, that sounds hardcore, "fight in Kharkow`s prison"
Alex: yes old long story. almost as hollywood movie scenario

Alex: Nothing special Igor went to jail to fight with Ukrainian mob boss who was former European boxingchampion.

Alex: I just want to said it is not rumor. I heard it from Kharkow`s guy but it sounded as a shit. So i ask for Igor about this story. He was confused alittle and talked unwillingly about that.

It was in early 90 years. Some ukrainian mob guy called "Baton" (nick name) spent his free time in jail. He was boring and got idea to sparring with Igor. Some people went to Igor and bring him an offer to fight in prison with their boss. It was very risky, but they paid good money. This fight happened illeagally and Igor beated him very much. Nothing personal, just a fight for money. As i said it was hight risky for Igor, becouse he went to prison illegally. Guys are there many fighters who makes same step?

Quote: just make shure you dont forgett about the Ukranian mob boss
Alex: I dont have that prison fight video. I must ask for Igor may be he has it.

So there it is I don't believe a video ever surfaced and Alex kinda disappeared from the Sherdog forums for awhile iirc ( Alex does still run one of the biggest mma forums in Russia today i believe)

What do you guys think? Do you believe Igor did this fight in a prison or is it just a story Alex made up

I haven't heard it, but have only been on sherdoggie dog a few times. do i believe it? Sure, but there is a significant amount of the story possibly not being told that could lend credibility to it.............just this man's opinion.

Same here. I read about this on the UG and always thought it would be great if more proof came forward. MMAHAWK @MMAHAWK do you have any insight?

I'd guess true. I'd also guess there was no footage being taken of a prison fight

Ok I don't get it. The mob boss spends his free time in jail? So he and Igor put on a show for the incarcerated? Or were they both locked up? The asked Igor about sparring part..early 90s part..so many question.

I want this to be true. Has anyone ever asked Igor? I imagine he probably doesn't have a Twitter or Facebook.

it's like the Lord of the rings, to contact him, instead of lighting beacons you have to ring bells. Eventually he will arise

I wished we had more guys like Alex on the internet from the start. What I mean is they were putting on shows from that part of the globe shortly after the UFC had a couple. Trouble is we couldn't see any of it. The ones that actually got footage hoarded it. As a collector I got all I could when I could
You can say that Russia/Ukraine/ ect have a MMA history all their own that most from the west aren't privy to.

That's very true. Even the IFC event combat in Kiev had to be smuggled out of the country James Bond style.

That's a whole story in itself.

Didn't Bas throw Varelins thru a window in a bar? Lol
In case someone hasn't heard this one...

-At a topless bar after the fight, Paul Varelans and Bas Rutten got carried away and Rutten threw Varelans through a glass door. "We were just playing around," admitted Rutten, though he claimed Varelans started it by biting a chunk out of his back. Later that evening, Rutten got so out of control that when a Ukrainian guard, machine gun in hand, asked him to calm down, the Dutchman slapped him across the face. In Holland, Rutten had a reputation for being a tough customer and had paid the price in jail on numerous occasions. The guard left and returned minutes later with 8 other armed men, only to find that Rutten had joined the ladies up on stage. Andy Anderson punched Rutten, grabbed him, and carried him away, knocking Rutten's head through another glass door by accident. Varelans ended up in the hospital while Rutten was taken to jail. -

I would have given my left nut to party with Bas just one night back his heyday. Total animal.

LoL at Andy Anderson clearing Bas off the stage. I had to double read to make sure the club was in Ukraine and not Andy Anderson's All Nude Steak House.
