For once, it would be nice to hear a news story about an old-school UFC competitor that didn’t involve a horrible crime or a death hoax. Ah, well. The Niagara Falls Reviewis reporting that 51-year-old martial artist Harold Howard — who compiled a 2-3 MMA record from 1994-1996, including a victory via forfeit over Royce Gracie at UFC 3 — was arrested last night after a Quinton Jackson-esque vehicular freak-out. Here’s what Howard has been accused of doing:

– Assaulting a male and a female with a weapon following a dispute at a residence, then fleeing the scene in his pick-up truck.

– Smashing into another vehicle in the driveway of a different residence, then taking off again.

– Evading police when they caught up to Howard and tried to pull him over.

– Intentionally driving his truck into the front doors of theFallsview Casino, where he came to a stop a short distance from the gaming floor.

– Failing to double-down on 11.

Said Niagara Regional Police Staff Sgt. Shawn Clarkson: "Thank God it wasn’t a Friday night. We were extremely fortunate not more people were around. A couple of people had to duck out of the way, but we could of had some real serious problems there if it had been a few hours earlier or another day…There were serious injuries [to the victims of the initial assaults], but not life-threatening at this point. There were head injuries and lacerations to arms and hands. They were taken to hospital and tests were being done."

Howard might be looking at serious jail time considering all the charges he picked up — two counts of attempted murder (!), two counts of assault with a weapon, attempted break and enter, fail to remain, flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, mischief and two counts of breach of recognizance.

A photo of the casino crime scene is below. In the immortal words of Howard himself, "I told you if it worked it worked, and it did and I didn’t, so in the end it didn’t."

Lee Lamrani Ibrahim "Lightning" Murray is anEnglish-Moroccan mixed martial artist and convicted bank robber. He was sentenced to 10 years in jail in June 2010 for masterminding a 2006 £53 million armed raidin Kent, England.[1] His term was then extended to 25 years on 30 November 2010.[2]

In comments made to Sports Illustrated in April 2008, UFC president Dana White said, "He (Murray) is a scary son-of-a-bitch. And I don't mean fighter-wise."

Witnesses claim Murray was involved in a scuffle with then-UFC light heavyweight champion Tito Ortiz outside of a nightclub in London after UFC 38 in July 2002, in which Murray allegedly fought Ortiz. Murray asserts he knocked Ortiz out[7]- a claim substantiated by Matt Hughes in his book "Made in America: The Most Dominant Champion in UFC History" (pg. 168), as well as Pat Miletich during an interview with ESPN.[8] Tito Ortiz however denies he was knocked out. Chuck Liddell has also stated that he did not see Tito knocked unconscious.[9]

On 28 September 2005, Murray was hospitalized after being stabbed in a brawl during the birthday party of British glamour model Lauren Pope. He suffered a punctured lung and a severed artery.[10][11] According to the doctor who performed the life saving surgery on Murray, he was resuscitated four times during the operation that saved his life. When thanked, the doctor remarked that Lee should thank the nurses who ran the bags of blood from the blood bank because that was what saved his life.

Murray had a difficult relationship with his father, who was often drunk and described as a "frightening, violent man" who was "volatile and domineering."[3] Largely absent from the first seven years of Lee's life, Brahim demanded respect and obedience from his son, at one point garnering a warning from police for mistreatment.[3] Eventually, Lee began to fight back against his father, with Lee's former next-door neighbor describing an incident where Brahim "actually went and hit Lee and Lee snapped, just turned round and knocked his Dad clean out...once he realized he could take down a big man like that I think that's what changed Lee into the man he is now - a thug."[3] The relationship between father and son eventually grew so tempestuous that Brahim felt staying at home would result in either he or Lee killing the other, so he moved out.[3] Barbara Murray was then left to raise Lee and Rkia largely on her own, and moved back to the Abbey Wood Estate by getting a council house on Grovebury Road around the corner from her parents.[3]

At this time Lee began attending Eaglesfield Boys School, which is where he would meet his eventual best friend and partner-in-crime, Paul Allen.[3] Murray - who does enjoy reading and puzzles - was a subpar student, and what little talent he did exhibit was in football, although he failed to make the school team.[3]Murray's teachers found him to be unmanageable, resulting in his expulsion and eventual enrollment at Woolwich Polytechnic School to complete the statutory years of his education.[3] By then Murray was living life on the streets, with stealing and drug-dealing a part of everyday activity; he and the Buttmarsh Boys were allegedly in daily contact with Nigerian drug dealers who operated at Plumstead train station, and an eventual turf war broke out that saw Murray and his friends emerge victorious, leading to their inheritance of the local drug trade.[3]

Murray would eventually be convicted of possession of cocaine and marijuana, in addition to being named in the Old Bailey as a notorious London drug dealer who employed Paul Allen as his right-hand man in addition to a network of drug runners.[3] One of Murray's best friends from this time was a local ruffian and future mixed martial artist named Mark "The Beast" Epstein, who claimed that he and Lee sold crack cocaine and that Murray "made a lot of money from that."[3] Murray also proved himself adept at the more violent side of selling drugs, typically in order to control territory and make sure customers pay.[3] Murray himself claimed that "some people would probably say I was a bully, but a bully to me is someone that goes for easy targets and people who can't fight back. Me, I went for all targets."[3] Murray was known for punching people almost at random in the street, as well as habitually harassing a man who ran a local corner shop.[3]

Murray was soon sent to the Feltham Young Offenders Institution, the first of several custodial sentences for relatively minor offenses such as assault and thievery; he also served time as a juvenile in Dover andNorwich as well.[3] Upon emerging from Feltham, Murray began attending the gym, lifting weights and drinking weight-gainer shakes in order to add bulk to his lanky, 6'3" frame.[3] Joining him at the gym was Paul Allen, who by then was known as "The Enforcer", presumably because he assisted in enforcing Murray's control over drug-dealing in their small swath of south-east London.[3]

Murray and Allen were soon using steroids and spending the money they earned from selling drugs on cars, typically of the big, flashy variety.[3] The police stopped Murray regularly, and because they suspected he was a drug dealer attempted to place an informer in his group but failed to acquire sufficient evidence to prosecute.[3] Murray was contemptuous of the police, often mocking and intimidating them on the streets, sometimes even following police officers around in his car.[3] Some officers at Plumstead Police Station were afraid of Murray, and there was even a rumour within the station that certain policemen preferred not to confront him, with one stating that "he's a very dangerous man."[3]

Murray's girlfriend Siobhan gave birth to his first child, a daughter named Lilly Jane on 24 December 1998.[3] Just weeks later Murray was caught up in a turf war with rival drug dealers that led to the arrest of Epstein and more than a dozen others, many ultimately ending up in prison.[3] Murray, however, got "clean away," with Epstein saying that "he was the only one that slipped through the net. I mean, lucky boy! But he's always been lucky...I went to prison for three years."[3]

Murray would marry Siobhan on 24 November 2000, listing himself on their wedding certificate as a "professional fighter."[3]

Murray would then divorce Siobhan in 2008 while incarcerated in a Moroccan jail.[

n 25 June 2006, in a joint operation withMoroccan police, Murray was arrested at a shopping centre in the Souissi district of the capital Rabat for suspected involvement in the Securitas depot robbery. Moroccan police said they had to use "specialist techniques to arrest the suspects because they were specialists in martial arts and firearms"[12]Kent Police said in a statement that they had been tracking Murray for three months and would be seeking his extradition from Morocco. There is no treaty between the UK and Morocco, and the process was expected to take months. Later, Moroccan police revealed that Murray had also been charged with possession of "hard drugs". An officer said this could complicate extradition proceedings because, in theory, Murray would have to serve time in Morocco first for any offences committed there.[13] On 27 June 2006 Kent Police confirmed the news of Murray's arrest in Morocco, and also stated that over 30 people had now been arrested in conjunction with the investigation.

In February 2007 Murray's lawyer speculated that Murray could be returned to Britain in exchange for suspected terrorist Mohamed Karbouzi, who is wanted for questioning by the Moroccan authorities in connection with the 2003 Casablanca bombings.[13]

In June 2009, an attempt to escape Salé prison in Morocco was made by Murray. Small saws were found in a plate of biscuits in Murray's cell by another prisoner who broke into it. Prison officials believe Murray was planning to cut through the iron bars of his cell window with the saws. To make the escape through the small window easier, Murray had lost a significant amount of weight recently through training hard and starving himself. Murray was in a different cell at the time as punishment for being caught with a laptop computer (with internet access) and five kilos of drugs. Other prisoners in Salé held it against Murray that he was able to use his money to smuggle in items like these, as well as expensive clothes. The fellow prisoner who broke into his cell was doing so to steal some of Murray's belongings.[14][15] He was convicted of the £53m crime in a Moroccan court in June 2010. Kent Police said Murray must serve 10 years in jail in Morocco for his involvement. This sentence was then extended to 25 years on 30 November 201

Overeem

When it was announced that Alistair Overeem turned down a Strikeforce heavyweight title fight against Brett Rogersdue to an injured hand, we thought it was one of those phantom injuries that mysteriously arises when someone asks you to fight a comparatively unknown up-and-comer on a month’s notice. But it turns out Overeem’s injury is very real. And there’s a pretty interesting story behind it.Fighter’s Only has the tale

In a recent blog posting, Boon told how Overeem (29-11-0-1) had suffered a hand infection following a nightclub brawl earlier this month. According to Boon, Alistair and his brother Valentine (26-22-0) – both heavyweights – had been involved in an altercation that left five security staff needing hospital treatment.

"Alistair attended some famous dance club with his brother Valentine. Went to the toilet and did not have coins to paythe toilet woman. Alistair told her he would pay a euro when he came back, because he did not have change. Then the security guard who was near by started to get involved," he wrote.
"Brother Valentine saw the incident and also started asking what the problem was. They offered to pay, but by then 6 security guards came over surrounding them. The Overeem brothers were asked to leave, Alistair was already outside when he saw his brother Valentine fighting.

"Valentine still was discussing the situation on his way outside with one of the security guards hit Valentine in the face with a flash light. Three security guards dived onto Valentine and brother Alistair wanted to go back inside to help his brother. This resulted in five security guards in the hospital."

Boon went on the reveal that one of the security guards involved in the incident was fired afterwards, while a second tried to lay the blame on the Overeem brothers.

In the meantime, Alistair Overeem was complaining of a painful cut on his hand and went to hospital at the urging of Golden Glory team mates.

"It was only because of the management pushing him to go to the hospital that he saved his hand. When he finally got his injury checked, he was advised to stay a few days in the hospital. They told him if he would have come any later he would have lost his hand," said Boon.

Neither Strikeforce nor Golden Glory have said when Overeem can now be expected to defend his title and a match is unlikely to take place before the end of the summer.

Well, at least it didn’t happen in one of those gay clubs. Now let this be a lesson to every American traveling abroad: When you’re partying in Holland, always keep an extra Euro in your shoe. You do not want to raise the ire of the Toilet Lady.

A club in Holland where I worked was called The Rockefeller—later they changed it to The Bandit—which was in a little village called Schaijk. People from all around, even from the big city, would come to this place because it was an awesome place. It had a really good DJ, his name was Bas also.

The club was at ground level, but they also had these stairs going down under the ground, where there was a little street with a German pub, and an English pub, and a snack bar. So if you were dancing upstairs and you got hungry, you could go downstairs and eat something. It was pretty cool.

Needless to say, troublemakers always “fell from the stairs.” If the cops would come to pick up bad people after we beat them up, they would always smile and say, “Fell from the stairs again, Bas?” and I’d say, “Yup! Fell from the stairs.” (laughs) That was always our thing because it was a nasty stairs, made of stone, so if they fell from there, they would probably have injuries like the ones we gave them… I think. I guess.

One time, there are these guys causing trouble, so we have to throw them right away out. I throw one of the guys first against the wall, then against the door, then I throw him outside. When that happens, I break the handle on the door with his body—it was made of metal, but I guess it was a different kind of metal, a weaker one, because it broke.

After he is outside, I go to close the door which is a very thick plexiglass that would never break, I think it could even stop a bullet. As I am closing it, the guy looks at me and tells me he is going wait for the right moment and then kill me, and then he slits his throat with his thumb.

Now, those threats you have to take serious. One of my bouncers tells me to come inside, but I say, “No, I’m going to take care of this now,” because I don’t want to be getting into my car next week, and have him and his friends jump me. I can’t take that risk.

So I go outside, and the guy puts up his fists. He was southpaw, right hand forward, and he steps into a REALLY wide karate stance or kung fu stance, I don’t know what it was. I think maybe he didn’t know either! (laughs) So I right away launch a right-foot roundhouse kick, full blast in his face, which is even worse for him because I am wearing steel toes. SMASH! It hits him and he goes down on his knees, and his lip is split in half, you can see the lip hanging. And then, because he was going to kill me, I load up for a penalty kick in his face.

This is the part where I am SO lucky here, man.

I kick with everything I have, maximum power, but just as I do that, he falls backwards so I miss, and the force [of the kick] makes me do a complete pirouette. I’m not even finished spinning when I realize that if I connected, he would have for sure died, so as I finish coming around, I put my hands up to the sky and think, “Thank YOOOU!!!” I know I would have kicked a hole in his face and he would guaranteed be dead, and today I would still be in jail and not be in America.

That’s one of those moments when you don’t think and you go on emotion. I was very, very lucky that I didn’t kill this guy.”

More bas, stolen from sherdog

Rutten set out to have a good time at Sweden's Spy Bar one night back in 1998. Unfortunately for Bas, the employees of the Spy Bar weren't big fans of his. "I was going to the Spy Bar in Sweden. When I walked in, the bouncers called me by my first name and then I knew that something was going to happen," Bas relates. No stranger to recognition, Bas decided to stay at the Stockholm hotspot and dance. After all, he had arrived with friends and was looking to have a good time. "Then I started to jump around Bas Rutten style which is just jumping and dancing to the music. Two bouncers came to me and asked me if I could come with them. I did and they put me in this fire escape room. There, one of them tells me that I have to leave. I said, 'okay, can you guys get my friend and tell him that I am out because he is also from Holland and doesn't know where to go here?"

Apparently looking for trouble, but not seeming to elicit the desired response from Bas' compliant tone, they resorted to more brutal tactics in order to bait Bas Rutten into fight. "That's where one of the two put a finger in my eye. I told him to stop, and that there was no reason to be aggressive. Then he put his finger in my other eye." Eye gouging is certainly beyond the realm of appropriate conduct for even The Spy Bar's notoriously rough bouncers. With his back literally against the wall, and his personal safety in harm's way, Bas reacted as instinct had taught him. "I KO'd the guy. Then the little guy jumped on me. They all had these little microphones in their ears. In no time there where three more."

Out-numbered by the arrival of reinforcements, the odds shifted from favoring the professional fighter to placing him in serious jeopardy. Rutten quickly learned that superior numbers would be the least of his concerns, however, as his aggressors began to arm themselves. "I was just fighting to get them away from me. Broomsticks came out and they started to hit me with them while I was busy hitting them. It was ugly."

Seeing that the situation had become a hopeless struggle for survival, Rutten realized that his only way out was to make a quick escape. "I was trying to make it downstairs and get the hell out of there. Once I was downstairs I found the door, and what do you know, it was closed." Pinned between a locked door and a posse of sadistic bouncers, Rutten came to a morbid conclusion; this had become life or death. "I turned around and I thought, 'OK, now I am going to hit you fucking guys in the throat and try to take you out,' since there was no other option."

As the world champion mixed martial artist prepared himself for the fight of his life, the scene took a dramatic and humorous turn. "I looked at them and they took a few steps back. 'All right,' I thought. They can see in my eyes that I really mean business now, and they are scared! I was wrong. Behind me was the whole police force waiting outside."

Just as his notoriety had brought on the night's conundrums, Bas' fame would see him clear of them. Spending the night in a Swedish jail might not have been the planned after-hours activity for that evening, but it certainly beat the alternative. When Bas Rutten's friends found him two days later, he was his typical, jovial self. He had even been granted privileges above and beyond those of his fellow inmates. "I was eating cookies and drinking coffee and tea while I was watching TV In my cell!"

The following is an excerpt from a Swedish newspaper regarding the incident:

A Really Rotten Fighter
The three security guards stood no chance whatsoever against the deadly professional fighter. "We were lucky to have the police right outside," says Fadde Darwich, safety inspector at the trendy Spy Bar in Stockholm. A week ago, the Dutch heavyweight street fighting instructor, Bas Rutten, assaulted three guards.

He is a champion of the unfair martial art street fighting where everything is allowed: knee-kicks, punching to the throat, and choking your opponent. Bas Rutten tried to apply some of these tricks as he visited Stockholm last Friday. "He arrived at Spy Bar late at night and was rude to a guest. We decided that he should leave the bar, and tumult arose," says Fadde Darwich.

Bas Rutten cut one guard's eyebrow and landed a few more shots, but no one received any serious damage. Rutten was arrested and taken to Norrmalmsarresten (the Norrmalm Jail). He was arrested for assault and assaulting a police officer. Bas Rutten was later set free. He's now disappeared and has probably gone abroad.

As they say, "every cloud has a silver lining," which is why our story doesn't end there. In their editorial, the Swedish newspaper who attempted to defame Bas Rutten for using what it interpreted to be rotten tactics actually showed a copy of Bas's Street and Self-Defense Tactics instructional video. Rather than achieving the desired end-result, the visual aid inspired readers to rush right out and learn the techniques that had allowed one man to survive the thugs at The Spy Bar.

In the modern kickboxing landscape, no figure throws as large a shadow as Badr Hari. The Moroccan fighter is a 2 timeK-1 Grand Prix finalist, a former It's Showtime Heavyweight champion, and has been a consensus top 5 fighter for years. But those accolades only tell half the story.

Because Badr Hari is also the "bad boy" of kickboxing. From his backstage altercation with Peter Graham, to his disqualification loses to Remy Bonjaskyand Hesdy Gerges, Hari has developed a reputation as a volatile loose cannon. Now, that reputation has finally caught up with him.

As I write this, Badr Hari sits in a Dutch prison cell, serving 90 days in solitary confinement. His crime is one we have reported on previously, but the details are worth repeating. On July 9, Hari attended a party at the Amsterdam ArenA. Also at the party was Dutch millionaire businessman Koen Everink. At some point in the night, Everink was assaulted in his VIP box, badly beaten, with his ankle shattered to the point that he may never fully walk again.

Hari's name was quickly implicated in the case, though his exact involvement was unclear. After a period of police investigation that included Hari leaving the country and subsequently being named the prime suspect, the K-1 fighter came forward and admitted his guilt. According to Hari, yes, he had been directly involved in the attack and had struck Everink. With that admission of guilt, Hari was jailed, where he now awaits a court date.

Related: Badr Hari Admits Guilt In Attack, Now In Prison | Badr Hari Charged With 'Attempted Manslaughter' In Netherlands

But the story is far from over. Once Hari was behind bars, accusations started to fly. A number of others, including a noted Amsterdam nightclub owner, stepped forward, stating that they too had been assaulted by Hari in the past, and had been afraid to speak up at the time for fear of further damages.

Now, Hari's lawyer has stated that the fighter is interested in moving past these legal issues, and so has confessed his guilt in a number of other incidents. These will likely lead to four more charges, meaning he is currently looking at charges in at least five separate cases, including an arson casecommitted against a pregnant woman that may involve noted Dutch mob figure Gwenette Martha.

Despite these confessions, Hari looks to be fighting some of the charges. Lawyer Benedicte Ficq stated that Hari should not be convicted of attempted manslaughter in the Everink case because, "[h]e gave a blow with the top of his hand, not with a fist. He disassociates himself from what happened afterwards."

What does this all mean for Hari's future? We can't know for sure just yet, but it has the potential to be very bad. The Dutch legal system tends towards leniency, but Hari's violent history and multiple charges can't be overlooked. He has the potential to be in prison for quite some time, and it's entirely possible we won't see him fight again.

Hari's legal troubles here are likely to not only severely damage his own career, but also the entire sport of kickboxing in The Netherlands. Even before these incidents, the sport was developing a negative stigma, particularly in Amsterdam, where there was a strong criminal element at their shows. The Netherlands are viewed as one of the homes of modern kickboxing, and have been a hotbed for kickboxing action for years, particularly from the It's Showtime organization. But last year, Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Laan went on a public crusade against the sport, stating that because of the criminal element it brought, it was not welcome. This prompted It's Showtime to leave Amsterdam as its primary home.

Now, with an international star of Hari's stature involved in these criminal charges, the reputation of the sport is sure to take a blow in the court of public opinion - one that could seriously damage the future prospects of any kickboxing promoter looking to run in Amsterdam.

The story on Badr Hari is yet to come to an end, but this is certainly a major chapter. We've seen great things in the ring from Hari, yet underneath, there was always a strong undercurrent of barely controlled violence. And it seems that violence was not as controlled as we thought.

What we're seeing now is perhaps the real truth of Hari - that, despite his talents in the ring, he is, quite simply, a criminal outside the ring. It's just a shame that so many people had to get hurt before that truth was revealed.

Yeah, that's a crazy stat. Lots of guys say when they fight, it's a finish either way, somebody's getting KO'd, etc. With Allistair it really was true. He obviously really went for it, like, every single time. D241 should be writing an essay on this guy :)

this is not how it went down, lol, Bassie spinning as always.

Alistair did not want to pay, he thought the toilet lady would not make a fuss about it, but she called security
so 3 security guys went to the brothers to get the story but a fight broke out and 3 other security guys were called from the front to the fight area.
No way that alistair left his brother inside alone with security guys, and as some people know if you fight bare knuckle and somebody else teeth sink in, when you punch them in the mouth, you're toast, because the mouth is full of bacteria.
Then both brothers flee the scene before the police arrived and the police were looking for them, found them and locked in the police jail on friday night, they did not gave alistair any medical assistance for his hand, cleaning or disinfecting.
It wasn't until monday afternoon Boon got them out of the police jail and Alistair went to the hospital, almost losing his hand.
it is rumored Boon payed the security guys damages, therefore the brothers got off at the court.
If alistair had this on his record, he could never fight overseas!:D
