I've been messing around with de la riva and anaconda guard. Does de la riva work only in the Gi?

I'm having WAY much more success now off my back now. I feel a lot more comfortable on my back rather than on top.

I'm still trying to figure out my game and familiarise myself with certain positions. I have yet to finish a rear naked choke because everyone I roll with is great at defending BUT I have taken the back many a times in my short time rolling and I feel my guy has a hard time shrugging me off.

Maybe im blowing smoke up my ass or maybe my partners are letting me in these positions who knows but one thing for sure I feel better every time I roll.

Rhino, what game would you recommend me to play and what bjj guys should I emulate.

I'm the typical lanky, skinny long legged, bjj guy who's pretty agile, flexible and I have cardio for days :D

Oh and btw I absolutely hate rolling in the Gi. Any chance to take it off i will.

I feel 5 pounds heavier and stuck in the Gi especially against the bigger guys. Someone told me gi will improve no gi game a lot but I'm not a fan of the gi.

You can play DLR no-gi, but you're relatively limited by the lack of gi and belt grips.

Is anaconda guard the same as 1 leg x? As a guy with a Marcelo body type (NOT long and lanky), I like that position.

maurice @maurice touched on it, you can use DLR in no gi, however the lack of sleeves, lapel, belt eliminates a lot of the grips needed to execute moves. Keenan Cornelius has altered his DLR for no gi (check out his Mantis guard series on Youtube).

I'm 6' 3.5" and about 215 these day... I like watching Roger Gracie, Robert Drysdale, Keenan Cornelius, Leandro Lo, and other taller guys... But I also play a lot of Butterfly guard, X Guard, and Lasso Guard (in Gi) that normally a lot of smaller guys play. Definitely check out those guys I listed to see what a guy who is taller and lankier can do, but watch everyone's game because you'll be surprised what you can pick up and try.

As for back attacks, remember to bug their arms to... In gi attack the lapel for chokes.... the more looks you give, the more they have to defend, and it opens them up to the possibility of making the mistake that gives you the opening to capitalize on.

ALWAYS TRAIN N YOUR GI!!!!!!!....... I mean do no gi too, but I'm saying this like gospel.... TRAIN IN YOUR GI!!!!!!

Today was open mat. Normal classes start from tomorrow but before sparring I was drilling with one of the brown belts. He was showing me how to take the back from this position. I'll have to post a pic because I'm not really good at explaining this shit and Im still unfamiliar with the names of positions and moves.

This is probably the closest pic I could find of the position I was in

Basically he told me to seatbelt grip my own wrist? Then push my knee high under behind opponents shoulders so when he turns on his knees I slide my high leg under for the hook and turn on that same side to take his back then put the other hook in and go for the RNC. I don't know if you got any of that Rhino but yeah that's what I was drilling for a while today lol.

It's one of my favorite back takes.... Seatbelt, switch mount, sit on your butt and throw a hook in.... Most guys think they're getting armbarred, so they focus on defending it, and it sets up the back take really easy

So then....

What have you guys been drilling today? Let's not make this place a ghost town and start discussing more as we promised!

I just taught an hour of self defense techniques to a private client. In my group class I taught the O Soto Gari throw (finishing with a hurdlers stretch armbar), and I showed 4 attacks from switch mount (two chokes and a wrist lock and shoulder lock). I'm drilling back attacks EBI style personally, normally I'll flow to mount or guard attacks if my opponent shifts from my back control, but I want to stay on their back and attack now (hence the drills).

Side control escapes this week for me, particularly killing the cross face and then controlling the cross facing arm

A lit bit of guard retention work today. I'm starting to feel more comfortable in my gi now. This may be an incorrect observation on my part but I feel guard retention is way easier in the Gi?

I think that is a common thought due to being able to use grips, but to a large degree I feel that it depends on the passer. I use grips in my favorite passing sequences, and have an easier time passing the guard of "wiggly" guys (that shrimp and start reguarding with their knees quickly as you start passing their legs) when I can grip pants/belt/gi to control their legs/hips and secure underhooks more solidly.

You only started a couple of months ago, right? Some people disagree but my belief is that closed guard is the first guard you should get competent with. Learn to break posture and get success with the basic subs and sweeps. The skills you'll learn here will be really useful and it is a simple, common and effective guard to use.

I think I'm on my 4th week now and even as a beginner I find close guard a safe place to be in

Woke up early for open mat day. There was only 6 of us.

I swear I rolled with the "professor" type guy. The guy constantly kept checking me every time I got into a dominant position and would switch and show me how to do it the correct way.

Maybe he was being sincere, but after the session other guys noticed it as well. They said he just didn't want to get tapped by what white belt lol. Cool guy though he actually taught me quite a bit today I just found it funny.

I would say that he was probably genuinely trying to help you.... Since you've just started, he was probably trying to correct mistakes. Now if this is still going on with you after a year of training, THEN you have a legit "Professor" type.

@Rhino

I'm just sitting at work bored so I might as well ask you this while you're online.

Does running do anything for mat cardio? I've asked few people and I've gotten different answers. Some say no. Others say yeah. Those in between say do sprints rather than run.

I understand being on the mat is the best way to improve cardio but will running give me any sort of advantage
