As an MMA fan, what's your opinion of Kickboxing?

Particularly the K-1 GP's?

Seems like alot of lesser forums have quite a few ignorant critics when it comes too K-1 in general. Many aren't even aware that K-1 had more than just the WGP, that they had MAX as well and that this had better talent. They think K-1 was garbage/a joke/not legit.

I'd be the first to say, MAX was where it was at back in the 2000's, although the GP's were great too.

Curious what this particular forum thinks.

Ive only seen a few events, but it was fuckin awesome. I don't know the names of most.

That dude who always hangs with cowboy I think. Joe maybe. And also that small girl who lost once so far in the ufc. But kickboxing, she's nasty. And many others of whom I can't remember the names

I was able to attend 5 or 6 las Vegas events in the early 2000's. The tournaments were great. I'd exchange 90% of today's MMA to get back the old Heavyweight K-1 days. Glory was strong immediately after K-1 basically ended but for me I need the 8-16 man tournaments. When those ended I slowly have been losing interest. I still do watch about 75% of the glory and lion fight events on TV. I realize k-1 is putting on great events with the lighter classes still but for me being old school. I've never completely became a fan of the lighter weights.

I do and I was a huge fan of Glory when they started.

But when they started focusing too much on the US(and the poor level of talent) and then alot of my favorite guys like Petro(the guy as my avatar) Levin, Ristie, Ghita, Valtellini etc either retired or just stopped fighting for Glory, my interest decreased.

Then there was no tv deal for Canada, so I couldn't even watch if I wanted too.

It' back on FN as far as I know now, but outside of Sittichai, Varga and a handful of other fighters, I really don't care as much as I used too.

Ever been to a live event? I've never for kickboxing. Would be sick tho. I wouldn't mind if big mma promotions sporadically mixed in big boxing or kickboxing matches as Co-mains

I enjoy kickboxing. As much as I love the ground game I find kickboxing more exciting than mma.

With no ground or stalling, I'm surprised more casual mma fans don't jump onboard kickboxing.

I like kb. Glory is building a solid product for sure. bellator kb doesn't interest me at all though. Seems like cheap squash matches most of the time.

do you mean that the overall level of the fights is inconsistent or that the performance of the fighters from fight to fight is inconsistent?

if it's the latter, IMO it's one of the things that make it so exciting. profesional kickboxers fight much more often than MMA fighters with much more late notice replacements and fighting through injuries more often, which makes even the best fighters bound to lose from time to time. the culture in kickboxing (even more in muay thai) is that your career is not built on one win or loss, it's not like the ufc with the "you're only as good as your last fight" mentality.

even the least active fighters like Giorgio Petrosyan, Nieky Holzken and Robin van Roosmalen still fight 3-4 times an year and the most active like Sittichai fight 10+ times an year dealing with injuries. that's why you'll never see a Floyd Mayweather-like record in kickboxing.

K-1 level striking not always works in mma indeed which makes it look bad to the untrained eye but there is a ton of reasons to explain why that happens and a whole lot of other examples where K-1 level actually worked pretty well. at least when they say "K-1 level striking" usually the guy actually fought in K-1 at the highest level. I have a never ending gripe with the millions of "muay thai champions" that fight in mma with varying levels of muay thai spanning from awful to medium often getting KTFO which prompts all the MMA bros to declare the inefectiveness of muay thai.

The problem is Bob Sapp beat Ernesto Hoost in K-1. That is up there with Matt Lindland subbing Travis Lutter in the UFC or Hendo beating Fedor. Things that make me cry at night.

Yeah twice...stuff like that just don't make sense. But Sapp had friendly refereeing in those fights and Hoost was incredibly stupid to abandon strategy and go blow for blow with a 300 pounds roided beast when he was working Sapp with leg kicks and body punches. Hoost actually was the one to advance in the WGP of their second fight and win it all because he was good to go and Sapp was wrecked.

Overall if there's one thing that the Bob Sapp K-1 experience proved it was that he couldn't compete with professional kickboxers. He was made to cry in the ring and had all the fight in him stolen by guys like Cro Cop and Remy Bonjasky.

Yes, so much talent in Glory. But key word is TRY to follow for me. No TV deal that I know of.

I used to love watching K-1 Grand Prix's. Especially during the 'Reem/Badr Hari rivalry (yeah, I know, real kickboxing fans think this is ghey). I like it, but ultimately I love watching the closest thing to a street fight as I can, hence my love for MMA.
