if he was doing what he's doing now in the UFC 10 years ago, how do you think the sport would be now? We can already see that he's having an impact on other fighters on the roster asking for money fights and shit in just the short span of time he's been in the ufc. Not to mention fighters would've wanted more money. Would he have killed the UFC if they refused to pay up others and the talent left for somewhere else?

Do you think he would have been just as popular? is it perfect timing with the help of social media that he's able to have such a big impact?

How do you think the UFC and its fighters will be 5, 10 yrs after he's gone?

He clearly made the sport more popular and I'm sure more people see big money is possible in the sport and will pursue it.

Obviously this is all hypothetical and we don't know if he will have an impact on the sport/fighters long term, but short term we can already see it.

No one would give a fuck. Ten years ago it was the era of Fedor.

I beg to differ. Both would be in two different organizations.
If he was around, it would've been the conor era... just like this one will be.

Anyway, do you think he will have a lasting impact on the sport? Young people deciding to get into it solely because of what he has done , seeing there is money in it, etc which could lead to future champions/contenders that might never have put on gloves in the first place

You may beg to differ all day long. But 10 years ago, the ufc was not the ufc it is today. Fedor was unbeaten, was considered by everyone the baddest man on the planet and everyone was thinking about whether he'd ever lose and if so who would do it and how. Back then white was not so influential with the press. Also, no one gave a fuck for the 145 division.

He'd still be a retarded obnoxious jerk off and I still wouldn't care if he drove off a cliff.

and most people stil don't. Most only cared when he was there. Also 10 years ago ufc didn't have FW division. Conor would've ktfo of BJ in lightweight

I think you are undervaluing the impact conor could have had. Like I said this is all hypothetical so no one knows ... and let's just say he wasn't as big as fedor, you don't think he would've created A decent surge in popularity for the ufc? And you don't think that could've had an impact on how the ufc would be today?

The butterfly effect.

Fedor was a quiet killer. Conor is a loud one. I think way more people would've definitely tuned in, like you see today .

Society was different 10 years ago and his way of promoting himself may not have been taking the same way it is now. There was once a time when people looked down on loudmouths and they were considered a joke. Now any publicity is good publicity.

Who really cares? He's never fighting in the UFC again.

Quite possible. Don't think the people of the UFC s biggest demographic changed that much. Still mostly young men.
Also if you look at Floyd in the past you see people watched him. Although Boxing was far more popular back then, the further you go back

Idk man. Just a hypothetical question that might interest some. Answering it for ten years ago could be the same as answering what kind of impact he could leave the UFC with ten years from now. Maybe it's none. Who knows. I just see the short term effect he's bringing, and was asking what people on this forum think about a possible long term effect.

Did fedor have an impact on the future of mma?

What impact are you talking about? Bringing in fans of skill, or WWE fan boys who find him running his mouth and stupid accent entertaining?

I think Conor has definitely benefitted from Jon Jones being out and being such a letdown. Also the whole thing with Cain. Those are the people who haven't shown up enough, both physically and in terms of spectacular wins, to just sit there and laugh at Conor's antics.

Woodley wants to be that guy, but it's just not working out. Maybe DC could have been that guy, but he's more of a company man than any of them. Stipe seems more to just want to ride the wave and benefit from Conor's activities rather than take him on too much.

In any case, what actually would have happened ten years ago is that Conor would have been choked out by Faber in the WEC, then moved up to lightweight and started working his way up.

If he were as successful ten years ago, then I would say the UFC would have brought back the concept of the superfight. Then he would have simply fit neatly into a provided structure rather than trying to carve his own and trying to push the company around.

I also think he may have been seen even more like a pro wrestling character.

No way the Fertittas would have allowed him to create as much of an uproar about pay at that time.

But let's say it all worked out. For sure there wouldn't be as many divisions or as many local shows. I think some of those shows lose money because of fighter salaries already. And the fighters would be getting a bigger cut, so less would be reinvested. We would probably have a UFC once a month. Fewer people would be able to make a living off of it, including coaches, gyms, etc. So more talent would be directed toward other sports, and the actual evolution of fight styles and techniques may not have happened as quickly.

And, if the growth wasn't as steep, the Fertittas may have gotten out a lot sooner, so who knows who would be running things now or how it could have gone. It could actually have been quashed already, no more UFC. All thanks to the Conor McGregor of ten years ago.

But who really knows?

Lmao yes this is possible. i was thinking Conor could've killed the UFC as well.

He might've done so right now. He (and others like Ronda) brought huge numbers, now they r gone and the numbers are Down dramatically. He may have caused a peak too soon and then the sudden drop in $$ hinders the new owners. Stocks might've gone public and then fucked everyone over, etc. infinite possibilities.

Good post

Yes. Fedor had a great impact on mma. He walked through a murderers row of the best HW fighters on the planet. (Sure, some cans) Has a great highlight reel. He knocked people out. He submitted legends. He fought the best of the best, and won. All the while with the build of an average Russian sipping chilled vodka in Vladivostok. So yes, if you have any respect for mma history, Fedor is an extinction level asteroid, and the Irish guy is a meteor that burns up in the upper atmosphere that has no impact and people will never remember the second it's gone. Now quit whining.

What was his impact though? He has accomplishments, yes. Can you explain his actual impact on mma?

You can see Conor is already impacting somewhat the way fighters behave, negotiate contracts, etc.

Fedor was just a fat guy winning. How many other fat guys do you see winning?

Gracie brought jiu jitsu into the sport. He had a tremendous impact.

Fedor brought fat ppl into it? Or what? Did he change people's style of fighting, negotiating contracts, behavior, etc?

I understand you think he's the goat, but again did he actually cause any change for all his years on top?

Examples of impact in sports: Barcelona brought about tiki taka that other teams tried to mimic and for years they were killing every team with it.
Last year Chelsea utilized a back 3 (rather than traditional 4) with 2 wing backs to good success and others in the league are now trying to copy it in the EPL.

I'd say these are examples of impacts, big or small, stil an impact on the sport.

He was a contigent factor on the UFC/Pride rivalry. He spurred countless conversations that kept the MMA community alive through the Internet when many prominent politicians were trying to kill the sport the has brought us all together. It was similar to how the WCW/WWE rivalry only fueled interest. The fact that we're talking about it now only proves my point.

Not to mention, at Fedor's peak, the global audience was much smaller than it is today. If you're taking into account the impact he had on the respective audience size, on a percentage basis, I'd say he certainly had impact.

Furthermore, what's the fight I show people to introduce someone to MMA?

Fedor/Goodridge. Everyone always knows the big black dude is going to kick the chubby white guys ass. Until they watch it.

Good posts. And fedor had longevity, conor doesn't so it's a little harder to impact the sport in less time. But Maybe it's all Thanks to fedor that we get to witness other greats who came after him, who he may have inspired to get into the sport. Also, like you said he helped keep mma alive, so I won't deny his impact. I wasn't around to witness fedor in pride, but I always hear about it.

You may be right; Conor might be a flash in the pan. But you can't say he hasn't had a big impact, especially in a such short time period. And you can't know for sure that that won't translate into long term impact, Until after he's gone for a while

And ufc had never had a "big 3", at any weight class, much less at HW, then when Pride had Fedor, Crocop, and Nog.

10 years ago conor would have been thrown to the wolves and eaten alive by wrestlers and not given a title shot for beating dennis siver and diego brandao
