Following the news of a possible UFC fight between number two-ranked lightweight Tony Ferguson and Kevin Lee, which would sideline number one-ranked Khabib Nurmagomedov from a hoped-for bout with Ferguson, the Russian’s father and coach spoke out on the issue.
The long-awaited fight between Nurmagomedov and Ferguson is up in the air again, with UFC head Dana White announcing that the latter will fight Lee for the interim lightweight championship belt at UFC 216.

Talking to RT Sport last month, Nurmagomedov revealed that he was aiming to fight Ferguson in November, at UFC 217 in Madison Square Garden, New York City.

“(November 4) is the date I asked UFC for,” he said back then.

“First they offered me a fight on October 7, but I couldn’t accept it. I want to prepare well and I don’t want to put my body at risk. I don’t want to make the same mistake and push my body,” he added, referring to his hospitalization after suffering weight cut issues ahead of the scheduled fight with Ferguson in March.

During their social media exchange, Ferguson later hinted that he is interested in the date.

“MSG Sounds Nice To Me. Get Ready For An Ass Whoopin' @TeamKhabib,” he tweeted.

The first reaction to White’s words from the Russian camp came from Nurmagomedov’s father and lifelong coach, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov.

“This morning we learned that Kevin Lee will fight for the interim belt with Tony Ferguson,” he wrote on his social media page in Russian.

“Second number (fights) with number seven, and this is (coming) from Dana White! Why not the number one with the third or the fourth one, fifth or the sixth?

Tony has said that they told him Khabib wouldn't be ready for msg. Imo it is not on Tony to wait for Khabib if they offer him what he wants (title fight). Everyone has a right to try to earn a living. Also, not the greatest look for him to say he thinks Khabib should only fight twice a year.

Imo Khabib gave up his shot, and I'm fine with him having to make weight for another fight before getting another shot.

Justifying Kevin Lee getting the shot is a different story. But he's the man of the moment.

he is right.they might as well just give tony the belt.rankings mean absolutely nothing to these people.if they dont want to or cant make the khabib fight then it should go to the next ranked fighter.the guy ranked 7th should never be in a title fight

Well if you look at the rankings it actually makes sense. I'm so sick of Khabib and his team, man. it's unbelievable at this point.

Anyway, this is the current UFC LW rankings:

Champion : Conor McGregor
1 Khabib Nurmagomedov
2 Tony Ferguson
3 Eddie Alvarez
4 Edson Barboza
5 Justin Gaethje
6 Nate Diaz
7 Kevin Lee

Khabib has turned down the fight (the latest in the never ending Khabib saga of not fighting anyone and demanding title shots)

Tony is #2. Eddie is doing Tuf with Gaethje. Ferguson beat Barboza already. Nate is not fighting anyone but Conor.

That literally leaves only Kevin Lee.

Perhaps if Khabib didn't miss weight earlier this year, and didn't turn down the chance to fight Tony at this show, it would be him in the spot. Instead, he and his team somehow think they have something to bitch about. Again.

I kind of feel bad for Khabib. His youth and good fight years are passing him by, and I really believe it's because he is influenced so much by the people around him. AKA, his dad, Ali. No wonder he turns to desserts for comfort. Everyone has inflated his value so much, and is so worried about their investment, that they're actually making horrible decisions and letting his value depreciate.

Time for Khabib to take control. I'd like to see a move to a new camp, make new friends, get a fresh start with a healthy lifestyle and trainers who actually know what they're talking about. There are so many amazing wrestlers out there to work with now -- Castillo, Bendo, Barnett, Davis, etc. I know he likes DC, but they can still be friends and train together. I don't know that he should go to TAM or anything, but I think he really needs someone like Castillo in his life, who is really good with nutrition etc.

Khabib needs a lifestyle change, and it needs to be in a very positive environment where he is surrounded by good influences at all times.
