I don't know because remeber what happens for with Johnson. He was like beating him up and asking nicely please give up lol. He seems to feel bad when he does too much damage.

Yes. But it may be one of those lies the teller convinces himself is true.

I've always thought that fighters are the most delusional people on the planet. You have to be - fuck stepping inside a cage with Edson Barboza unless you have a couple of screws loose.

Of course he lied.
Stupid statement.
You can't stop yourself from finishing a guy if the opportunity is there. You just can't - unless you have an 'agreement' beforehand.

Bottom line is, any professional fighter knows he has to minimize any and all risk of injury, so even if he is dominating a fight like Khabib was, he's always going to go for the finish, because it ends the fight sooner and minimizes his risk of possible injury.

tl;dr Khabib is full of shit

At the post fight press conference I thought he said he did try to finish him, but Edson was just really tough.

Nah, he said he could have finished him but wanted to go 15 minutes because he had so much time off and wanted to repay his fans.

He said that to rogan, but I'm pretty sure he said otherwise in the press conference. Don't make me rewatch that boring shit to find the quote. I didn't get much sleep last night.

He could have tried different ways to finish but nobody can say for certain they would have worked. He probably believes he could have finished him with a choke or something, but I'm with lorofthepies on this one. What doesn't make sense is that a finish is the best crowd-pleaser there is, especially if it comes after a prolonged beating. So if Khabib was really concerned about that, he would have finished Barboza in the 4th or 5th round. That way the crowd would get the best of both worlds, that is, a long bloody fight AND a finish.
