A couple of great replies already. I think of it this way:
- If you're early, sit up and break the pants grips ASAP. Incidentally, this leaves you in a good position for a variety of counter-attacks.
- If you're late, turn and frame on the shoulder or head to keep them from getting their head across to the other side of your body.

How to combat heavier guys that play seated guard? You know the guys that always sit up for the single leg? I can explain in more detail. Last few weeks one particular guy at my gym has been sweeping me a lot from here

More qualified posters can give you sound, fundamental ways to flatten them out or stuff the single, so I'll just give you a fun option:

When they sit up, you can try a few things when their legs are still in front of them (before they come up to combat base and start to stand with the single leg). 1) you can grip at their knees and try to Toreando pass. 2) if they are scootIng forwards to establish contact, you can drop to your knees into butterfly guard and then initiate a butterfly guard pass like the headstand pass 3) as they start coming forward, post on their forehead (the Heisman), or touch their shoulder to stop their upper body for a second, drop your head to their hip (where their pocket would be if gi pants had one), grab the outside of their knee on the same side your head is on and walk your legs around that side 4) if they are already coming up to their knees but have not established a grip on your leg yet, then collar tie and snapdown/sprawl and jump on a guillotine.

If those suggestions don’t make sense from the situation where you are getting single legged from sit-up guard, post a video if you have one of what is happening to you.

Thanks doc all those suggestions made sense, I could visualise what you said.

Here is kind of what is happening

Not sure if cobrinha is grabbing the lapel in the video, but basically I'm stepping in and my lapel is getting wrapped through my leg and I'm getting taken down.

I think my best options will be to avoid stepping inside and just try x pass the butterfly guard? Or like you said, make a grip on the inside of his knees and try toreando from there. I'll experiment with this tomorrow

Guard passing concepts. I love using concepts to teach. There’s no sense learning techniques if you don’t know why or when they’re used.

Any pressure passers here?

Im trying to combine tight close range pressure passing with loose mid range dynamic passing.

My dynamic passing feels great (at times) pressure passing feels too lose.

Any tips?

Seminar today by River Dillon. High level competition brown belt from the UK.

He went over his passing concepts and made us pass from the opponents 'weaker side'

I already knew the 'lo drag' and the backstep/long pass but he showed me some diamond details today that would work well for my game

Sounds obvious but drive your weight through them so that they cannot move. I mean REALLY squash them into the floor. Eg, drive your shoulder into their guts and lift their hips high. Or get an underhook and pull your weight through their chest. Basically, get a grip of something and use it to pull your weight through them.

There's probably better ways for someone with my body type to pass the guard, but I've realised against some people you HAVE to pass them like this, as in, getting in between their legs and getting their hips off the ground. Especially the long flexible guys.

Yep. I've been working some of this stuff especially for you ;)

With all the bullshit going on in MMA, I'm glad that we don't have that much bullshit to contend with in the BJJ World LOL

It's 90% of my passing when rolling with fellow light/feather guys. Rafael and Bernardo have done seminars at our gym with a focus on this which helped me immensely, including the one he's showing here. As an older, lighter guy it fits my style well and with minimal effort.

Agreed Brotha, I have been on the road a lot with music festival season, however it has given me the opportunity to go train at a lot of new places and see different approaches to BJJ.

Personally I have been focusing on movement and drilling basics, I think that there has been such a push into open guard play in the gi, and leg locks only in no gi, that people are starting to move away from simple catches.... Hell I have found in my training that I've been catching more basic attacks lately against higher level guys who are only looking to set up a involved lasso sweep attack, keep to the basics and your success rate will elevate

Side note (And I almost feel like making a separate thread on it).... The leg lock game, how many of your gyms have a sole class dedicated to leg locks only? I have seen this as a rising trend..... A lot of gyms I see now have this curriculum... Beginner and Advanced Gi and No Gi, Leg Lock Beginner and Advanced, Pro Training, Drills & Cardio, maybe a self defense class...... Personally, I think this is dumb as fuck, making it all about leg lock attacks (I see a lot of guys now shitting on BJJ, saying that 'Catch Wrestling and Sambo are the only way to go'.... As they wear their BJJ Black Belts).

I hate how I don't see Judo/Wrestling on the schedules, but let's dedicate all this time to showing 90 ashi garami variants that all end in a heel hook gets multiple dedicated class times in a lot of gyms. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE leg locks, and when I was a purple belt, I was ALL about going for them non stop..... But nowadays when I see someone only playing that game, and forgoing other attacks, it annoys me... Everyone thinks they're a member of the DDS now. I just recently rolled against a high level brown belt who everyone told me was a great leg locker, and I wrist locked and darce'd him a shit ton (as he tried to play a deep half entries), he was shocked that he didn't see them coming, I was like HOW?????

Focusing a lot on Judo currently, and rolling in 4oz gloves and strikes to help get some of our fighters ready for fights next weekend.
Promotions tonight, then back to our series on fundamental guard passing next week.

On a related note- @Rhino, looks like I will be coming to Orlando for the Association of Boxing Commissions Conference July 29 - Aug 2. Once I get my schedule confirmed, I will message you and see if I can come in to your place and train while I am down there.

We don’t have a leg lock only class, but when I roll with my instructor we spend an inordinate amount of time fighting for leg locks since we know the other parts of each other’s game so well.
