I dont see how he doesn't get fucked here. If Max wins, who knows what happens at 145. If Max gets mauled, his stock drops which could result in lower PPV buys & if Ortega wins it would seem less impressive to some.
He is an up and coming star. I think that the UFC would immediately put him into an interim title fight to set up Max's next fight at 145. That will keep Brian active and give him a title shot.
If Max wins the LW belt he may not even want to come back down to FW.

To be fair, there is the very narrow possibility that Max loses in an epic barnburner, preferably by split decision, and his stock doesn't take damage or maybe even rises despite a loss. And Max and Khabib are two fighters I believe capable of having such a fight.
If I'm Ortega I'm not holding my breath though.

It is a no lose for T-City. Max loses against Khabib, Ortega gets the title shot he has been planning on. If Max pulls the upset and elects to stay at LW to face Conor in the money fight, thenOrtega fights another challenger at 145, who in all likelihood would not be as big a threat to him as Max.
