Not feeling as bad as I expected today. The soreness is gone but some battle wounds showed up.

Start taping your fingers if you do a lot of gi. I wish I taped my fingers a lot earlier, I have a callus on my finger from grabbing the pant grip every single day, it looks pretty ugly, was supposed to go doctors so they could freeze it off but I’ve been lazy

Tape your fingers and don’t deathgrip!

I ordered some tape.
Not sure it will be in before my next class but will definitely ease up on my grip.

2nd class.
- No else showed up so I basically had a private session.
- Went over basic drills and positions.
- Rolled with the instructor and got submitted countless times.
-Taped my fingers but forgot my toes. Now my toes are sore.
- Had a blast again. So addictive!

I used to love these classes at my old gym, my current gym is a lot bigger so we never have small classes

I live in a small community so I don't foresee large classes anytime soon which is nice.
However I hope they don't get much smaller either.

The thing with having smaller classes is that the rolls can become boring, you know everyone's style, their favoruite grips, submissions etc.

And this is where I use my coaches philosophy (which is a Gracie philosophy) of "train against yourself".... Put yourself in the deepest hole and work out.... or if you're a guard player, only play mount.... Or limit yourself to one submission.... Or eliminate a submission after you've caught it..... You'll notice that your training will improve with this

Good stuff. I'm coming up on my one year in October and when I'm with guys I have an advantage on its "catch and release" rolls. The biggest difference I'm noticing is chilling the fuck out and not going 100% with every movement. I've gone from gasping for air after one 3:00 roll to working my way through multiple 5:00 rolls and being able to talk through out. As of now my favorite technique is the Kimura, try to slap it on every chance it looks possible. Like you mentioned i put myself in shit spots and try find an opening or just survive against bigger or better guys.

S @Super Dave have you asked about tourneys?

One of the things that always stuck with me, is that when Marcelo Garcia was on his championship run, a lot of the time he was training with the white and blue belts at his academy... Flow rolling and drilling, just moving and getting comfortable with transitions.... All while he was dominating the world scene.

In the day and age of "Everyday Porrada", where guys are killing each other, it's great to see (and personally from my experience) that drilling and flowing are as important as ever (especially for us old guys).

When you guys roll, don't worry about subs for the whole round until 30 seconds left in the round.... Then try to catch as many as you can in that time..... The more time you add to your round, the more you can add to your sub time.... Example....

3 min round... 30 secs of sub time
4 min round... 45 secs of sub time
5 min round... 1 minute of sub time
6 min round... 1:15 of sub time
7 min round... 1:30 of sub time
8 min round... 1:45 of sub time
9+ min round... 2 minutes of sub time

This will force you to flow and move, work on transitions and sweeps, winning scrambles and dominating positions. I'm not saying don't swing for a sub, just don't finish the catches, AND keep moving right from that spot, don't reset to a neutral position (example: if you catch a kimura from Mount in sub or transition time, don't hope off and start again from your knees or standup, just keep going and don't catch that same sub at that time).

Try that for a week and see how much your cardio and your transitions improve, and let me know.

S @Super Dave have you asked about tourneys?
Are you challenging me?!!!

But seriously I haven't directly asked. I'm so out of shape, that I'm focusing on being able to get through a couple 5 minute rolls.

I discovered an old friend trains at my gym and he competes so they do have students entering competition, though I'm not sure what the expectations are before representing the gym.

Let's meet at a tourney in Calgary or something in the future for sure man. I'm 38 currently 180-185ish but am slowly trimming off 5-10, I think we'd be in masters 2? That would be awesome. I can't see any club not enocouraging any will students to compete, I bet they'd love it.

Let's team up and storm @Rhino.
I've already mastered the art of tapping out to higher ranks.

I'd definitely be down for a meet up to roll or compete someday.

I try to get to class even when I cant participate. If all I can do is sit on the side and take notes I find that it helps my game.
