I’ve never been to any of the poor SE Asian countries. I work with a lot of nurses and medical assistants from the Philippines who keep saying they want to plan a trip together. Anyone been before?

I've only been to Mindanao, and some of the smaller satellite islands that immediately surround the island. You can't go wrong with most of the touristy places, but in the more rural parts of Mindanao it can get a bit sketchy if you're white (which I am). Muslim terrorists, kidnappings, etc. I've only had good experiences, but that stuff exists there for sure.

Why did you only go to these remote areas?

It’s where my MIL is from, lots of family in Mindanao. I was always with a big group of family that could tell us where it was ok to go, and where not to go.

Where some of them live way up in the mountains, members of Abu Sayyaf can be around or traveling through. We never had any issues, but shit has definitely happened before. Ransom kidnappings and stuff like that. I was fortunate that we always had local chaperones to keep us away from anything too sketchy. There were a couple of small villages up in the mountains where the locals told us to keep moving (because there were two of us whiteys) if we wanted to avoid trouble. Then we gave them some food and water, maybe a little cash, to say “thanks”.

Again, I’ve never personally had any issues. But it’s enough for me to at least be aware.

That’s what I’ve heard.

I was looking at real estate there and everything seems hella cheap. Doubt I’d ever buy anything there, but it might be cool to go hang out for a bit after I retire. We have a place in Taiwan we will probably stay at for some of the year. Doesn’t look like too far of a flight from there.

Yeah, the real estate is priced very enticingly.

And I hope you didn’t take my reply above the wrong way. I really enjoyed visiting the Philippines and will definitely go again. Most tourists don’t visit the more rural places. I was just pointing out that that stuff exists there. The more tourist/expat friendly places are absolutely amazing. If you get the chance to go, do it.

With the scenery/nature, wildlife, beaches, food, family....it’s a lot of fun for us when we visit.

Unless you're filipino you can't own land there, just condos. If you married a filipina you could purchase a house, but it would need to be in her name and you would have zero control over it in a divorce, or if she just decided to sell it and leave you. There are creative ways of purchasing, but not worth the risk, imo.
