As I already said, the programmers were allowed to update the machine inbetwen matches. This is basically cheating, and makes the rematch void, i'm afraid.

My vote goes to Fischer, it's a shame he never played Kasparov.
Fischer demoralised his opponents and many conceded before even reaching end game. They say Fischer was unintelligent in every other aspect of his life outside of chess.

Kasparov recently had a game with Magnus Carlsen. Maybe a year ago. It ended in a draw, but Magnus would get up and walk around the room waiting for Kasparov to make his move. Kasparov was lucky to get a draw. When the game was over he disappeared immediately, said to be quite frustrated.

Was just taking the piss outta you. The deep blue program was an achievement in AI. Ray Kurzweil discussed it a fair bit in his book age of spiritual machines. How the rate of technology is ever increasing.

I don't know who would technically be the greatest player, but if we are talking GOAT status in terms of how legendary, how memorable, most entertaining etc then Bobby Fischer wins hands down.
Dude was a child prodigy, whooping masters before he could bust a nut, an arrogant SOB in interviews, was involved in all sorts of international spy intrigue (yes he had KGB and CIA etc following him around), was getting personal briefings from Kissenger, disappeared at the peak of his fame, came back from hiding to kick more ass, directly disobeyed orders from US government to play chess in 'enemy territory', was on the run as a fugitive from George Bush Sr personally, captured and tortured in a japanese prison, received refugee status in Iceland, and ended his days as a hardcore conspiracy theorist literally putting tinfoil on his windows lol

I find it hard to dispute this. The movie about Fischer is where I learned about him I was most impressed. I can't say who was the best player ever, but Fischer was the most controversial and the most interesting for me.
Agree. His intelligence was truly awesome, but monolithic. Chess was all he knew. He was lost in the outside world.

an American prodigy, but American chess was basically non-existent when Bobby took his first Junior Championship. He wasn't considered a true 'prodigy' until "The Game of The Century". And even Bobby Fischer said of that performance that "I was just lucky."
