As I already said, the programmers were allowed to update the machine inbetwen matches. This is basically cheating, and makes the rematch void, i'm afraid.
Yeah I know, i was kidding.
My vote goes to Fischer, it's a shame he never played Kasparov.
Fischer demoralised his opponents and many conceded before even reaching end game. They say Fischer was unintelligent in every other aspect of his life outside of chess.

As predicted, a bunch of fanuc Americans who just repeat what they're told, jump on and say Fischer even though they have no idea what they're talking about.

Kasparov recently had a game with Magnus Carlsen. Maybe a year ago. It ended in a draw, but Magnus would get up and walk around the room waiting for Kasparov to make his move. Kasparov was lucky to get a draw. When the game was over he disappeared immediately, said to be quite frustrated.

Imo, Fischer was the past, Carlsen is the future.

they also let the programmers update Big Blue between matches.
Garry had to use the same brain both times.

AlphaZero>>Kasparov>Big Blue
Was just taking the piss outta you. The deep blue program was an achievement in AI. Ray Kurzweil discussed it a fair bit in his book age of spiritual machines. How the rate of technology is ever increasing.

I don't know who would technically be the greatest player, but if we are talking GOAT status in terms of how legendary, how memorable, most entertaining etc then Bobby Fischer wins hands down.

Dude was a child prodigy, whooping masters before he could bust a nut, an arrogant SOB in interviews, was involved in all sorts of international spy intrigue (yes he had KGB and CIA etc following him around), was getting personal briefings from Kissenger, disappeared at the peak of his fame, came back from hiding to kick more ass, directly disobeyed orders from US government to play chess in 'enemy territory', was on the run as a fugitive from George Bush Sr personally, captured and tortured in a japanese prison, received refugee status in Iceland, and ended his days as a hardcore conspiracy theorist literally putting tinfoil on his windows lol

LOL how awesome can you get???

I find it hard to dispute this. The movie about Fischer is where I learned about him I was most impressed. I can't say who was the best player ever, but Fischer was the most controversial and the most interesting for me.

Agree. His intelligence was truly awesome, but monolithic. Chess was all he knew. He was lost in the outside world.

You probably know how he was at the end of his life.

an American prodigy, but American chess was basically non-existent when Bobby took his first Junior Championship. He wasn't considered a true 'prodigy' until "The Game of The Century". And even Bobby Fischer said of that performance that "I was just lucky."
He was the greatest "Jamaican bobsledder" at the age of 15.

an arrogant SOB in interviews, was involved in all sorts of international spy intrigue (yes he had KGB and CIA etc following him around), was getting personal briefings from Kissenger
He was paranoid and delusional. He hated Russia and communism, but that was because he felt his mom loved communism more than she loved him. His mother's Jewish ancestry also resulted in him being vehemently anti-Semitic. He idolized Hitler, denied the occurrence of the Holocaust, and hated America as a puppet of the Jews. He openly celebrated the Sept 11th attacks as America getting what it had coming.

disappeared at the peak of his fame, came back from hiding to kick more ass, directly disobeyed orders from US government to play chess in 'enemy territory'
He dominated for 3 years in the early 70s, in a way that no one dominated before or has since. His popularity was bolstered by the US-Russia athletic rivalry, much like Dan Gable in wrestling at the same time. But his return in 1992 left no doubt that his play had not evolved since he left the public eye. The Spassky rematch made Fischer a chunk of money, but it exposed him as someone who could not have held the Championship in the intervening 20 years.

He was also notorious for refusing to participate in matches where he didn't get to pick the rules.

was on the run as a fugitive from George Bush Sr personally, captured and tortured in a japanese prison, received refugee status in Iceland, and ended his days as a hardcore conspiracy theorist literally putting tinfoil on his windows lol
He violated an embargo by providing material support to an authoritarian regime that was universally criticized by the world community. And he spat on the Executive Order in front of the international press corps, basically demanding that the US issue an arrest warrant. Even then, he lived and traveled freely around the world, even getting his US passport renewed. He was held for 2 weeks in a Japanese jail, where his torture consisted of his claims that he was arrested roughly, kept in a room without a window, and the smell of cigarette smoke was pervasive in his cell.

^ I thought he was in japanese prison for longer than 2 weeks... I thought it was several years

Lets confirm. He sure looked like shit when he came out, there is video of him upon release getting on a private jet to Iceland. I thought that footage was fascinating

Hoping you're not being facetious, & agreeing with me that his story is a great one.

Sometimes I honestly wonder if his death may not have been natural, as he was spouting some really high profile conspiracy stuff in some really tense times

Dangerous figure in the public eye, his life showed that already in spades
