I agree with Askren. Robbie's hand/arm dropped like a tranquilized gorilla. Maybe he jumped back awake but wan't going anywhere/not defending

BTW, I accidentally choked my wife out (her request to feel a rear naked choke that was applied ultra slow) and she went out rather quickly and didn't tap. Went limp, to which I was like wtf, and as soon as I let up she started to get up. So no BS, my worst internet debate position in my entire life...it can happen because I choked my wife out one time

Some of those votes could be based on the fact that people love Robbie and not based on objectivity. I really like both guys and didn't want to see either lose. That said, he sure looked like he was out. Arms don't just go limp like that. In my untrained mind, it's hard to imagine he made a decision to put his arm down and decided that was the way to do it.

I dont think Robbie was out but I’ve seen videos that explain definitely possible to choke someone out over the chin, which u need tremendous amount of strength to crush the jaw-bone to the throat.

@Wild posted exactly how I saw it in Rener Gracie's breakdown video.He gave examples of Raquel Pennington, Faber, and a reverse besides Newton/Miletich.
I've also seen them more prevalently at smaller shows.
In the history of mma sanctioned events there's probably been a few hundred.
I've put out two guys with modified versions in my lifetime, same arteries pinched.
When Robbie dropped his arm, he was absolutely out.
Then he almost absolutely came to after a let up, but would've been a corpse had Askren held on.
It was not a bad stoppage, just a frustrating one after a guy pops up like that after a loose thumbs up, especially a likable murderer like Robbie.
Like I said, it is absolutely a legit choke.
they are always gonna think that bjj is supremely superior to anything and that they would never admit that BJJ could be negated.. who knows if it would've mattered cuz Herb ensured that he fkd that up...If it was under the chin like Newton vs Pat then I can see him getting put out..but I don't see rob lawler tapping to a painful squeeze that isn't putting him to sleep.

When watching love I thought Lawler was out. Once Herb called it and he popped up I wasn't sure. Watch this little highlight clip. Imo Askren locks it up and Lawler is keeping his right arm on the far side of Ben's heads when all of the sudden it just flops to the mat. When Herb gets in there Ben males a quick adjustment and I'm betting that was enough to bring Robbie back allowing him to pop up right after.
On fight night I thought Lawler got robbed. After many reviews I think it was a decent call. I don't think Lawler was completely out bit he wasn't fully there. Reminds me of Lee vs Chiesa and I thought it was the right call.
That's Ben's take on it too. He said when Herb jumped in there, he let off just a little bit & he thinks that was enough to let Robbie come back.
If the adjustment is what brought Lawler back , then he responded to his arm being lifted and gave a thumbs up while unconscious.
People seem to be making a big thing of this.
He wasn't out, so where the choke has to be in order to work isn't relevant to the conversation.
Like I posted above I don't think he was completely out, similar to Lee vs Cheisa.
The thumb up came before Herb puts his hands on Askren no doubt, the gif on page one is a good angle I missed. What do you make of the way Lawlers arm falls to the mat? That doesn't look like somebody releasing a grip on purpose. It looks dead from the moment it leaves Ben's head until shortly after it hits the ground.
It definitely made me think he was out while I was watching it live. The thing is i don't see any reasonable explanation for how someone would be choked unconscious and then come to while still being choked.
Agreed. Unless you're in there it's impossible to tell.
