Apparently there was a recent nasty shooting in Nigeria where someone shot up a Christian church, killed 14 people + injured.

But the 'news' doesn't seem to be interested in that.

Chew on that - what's the difference(s)?
If you are making some larger point about why the western media values the lives of western people more than others, then I'm with you.

But that's not the point you are trying to make, is it?

If a Muslim had killed 49 people in a NZ church, you don't think that would be getting the same attention?

You tell us.
Did the Nigerian shooter have an online manifesto, saying he was going to kill Christians?

I'm not trying to make much of a point other than that. Just observing the comparison/hypocrisy.

And good question, I would honestly wonder if a Muslim shooter at a Christian church would get the same coverage or not. I don't know what that Nigerian killer had done or said. But MSM don't give a fuck clearly. I personally suspect the MSM would not come to the defense of Christians/slander of a Muslim quite as enthusiastically. They seem to be on a witchhunt these days for as many rightwing white extremists as they can find, while at the same time they continue to demonize any instance of 'Islamophobia'. Its my suspicion that there is more to this selective attention in the MSM than simply a matter of valuing some lives over others. This is not merely reporting events for information's sake, to me its clear MSM is loving this story to add fuel to their fires and heat up divisive/extremist rhetoric and perceptions.

Does anyone have a link to the actual manifesto? Has anyone here actually gone through it? Tons of articles making reference to it and cherrypicking certain lines from it, but I haven't found any yet that actually post any pages of it in larger context. I'd be curious. Have you seen anyone doubting if the manifesto was 100% linked to the killer?

thanks

Agree with your point, but in places like Nigeria that shit happens so much it's lost its shock value. It's never happened to this scale on NZ

They were rhetorical questions, champ. I know you don't actually give a dusty fuck about Nigerians Christians and were building up to some tinfoil shit. But even though I was expecting it, still LOL at the 'MSM' being on a 'withchunt' for rightwing extremists. Shit, if a guy filming himself murdering 49 innocent people is a victim of a media witchhunt, I'd hate to see what you consider a newsworthy atrocity.

Also, I've got some research for you. There were these events that have been called September 11, the London Bombings, the Paris attacks, Charlie Hebdo. Surprisingly, I bet you'll find more than article or two on them - I think even CNN might have covered them.

good points, but in the Hebdo/London/et al, it's portrayed as 'look at everything we've done to drive these poor people to senseless murder'.

but when the tables are turned, the actions are symptomatic of an inherent part of the ideology. He's a White Nationalist (setting aside that he's as much a Green Socialist as a White Nationalist), the narrative launches from the assumption that of course he's going to shoot up a mosque if he can get guns.

The media narrative is "We need to lock up people of this ideology and make it harder for everyone (except the state and its agents) to acquire firearms."

When Islamists do it, it's an aberration of a single person/small group.
When Nationalists do it, it's an inevitable outcome of the belief system.

Yes, I remember there being complete consensus across the board that those people had it coming. Everyone was walking around with these T-Shirts. I can't remember what they said but I think it says 'Mashallah. Allahu Akbar. Fuck Charlie Hebdo.'

I live in chch, pretty surreal feeling here about now.

As a community it feels much the same after the 2010/11 earthquakes. And that's probably a very similar feeling that goes for all kiwis.

If you've got any questions about what's happening on the ground or in the NZ media, ask away.
